For 18 months you expressed some concern about a large influx of immigrants from Romania & Bulgaria much to the mirth of some ABers. In view of this week's figures that 187,000 have indeed flooded in from those 2 countries in 12 months, are you happy that you were proved right and 'the usual suspects' have a great deal of egg on their faces. Or does it just deepen your original concerns.

There does seem to be a multitude of self- loathing anti-Brits on this site!

Might be an interesting link to the debate. It certainly causes concern to me.
Still some on this site will brand Sir Andrew Green a racist out of hand as what he says doesn't suit their agenda.

// Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show some 503,000 people came to live in the UK in the year ending June, compared with 517,000 people the previous year. //
// So according to those figures a drop of 14,000 came to the UK, that goes to prove that the Tories are getting the figures down. //
Except those aren't last years figures, they are 2013. The ONS Report for 2014 says...
// 583,000 people immigrated to the UK in the year ending June 2014, a statistically significant increase from 502,000 in the previous 12 months. //
So that goes to prove that the Tories are NOT getting the figures down.

They all put me in mind to those famous historical happening, "Nero fiddles while Rome burns", "I see no ships", "Crisis what Crisis".
But wait until it is all crumbling behind them, (I say behind them, because it is sure as hell crumbling in front of them now)

OAG If you worked during the 50's I presume that you were liable for National Service, a two year period.
The pay for a conscript was 4 shillings a day which was 28 shillings per week ( £1.40p in present day money).
This is around £ 70 per annum ,well under the ridiculous figure you quote of £589 per annum for the average salary in the 50's

These two examples are not too well under what aog has quoted for 1950

Thanks New Judge.
If you had read the bottom of page 5, it make plain that the 187,000 figure is mostly made up of Bulgarians/Romanians who were here prior to 1.1.14.
// Previously published analysis indicates that EU2 NINo registration figures from the 1st January 2014 are actually reflecting migration over an extended period: Approx 36% of those EU2 nationals registering for a NINo since transitional controls were lifted had arrived in the UK before 1st January 2014 //

You are confusing EU2 immigration with ALL immigration. I said the EU2 immigration had risen by less than 15,000 so could not be called a flood as Svejk had labelled it. But ALL immigration has risen, and the net migration figure is terrible for a Party that said it was going to cut it to the tens of thousands.

To quote the pay of a conscripted serviceman is hardly a fair assessment of pay in 1950.
Bed/Board and clothing included. No option to avoid National Service unless health or specialist occupation. No right to strike over pay conditions etc etc.
Manual worker in 1950 paid £7 10s. 5d per week. No comparison really at 28 bob for a conscript is there?
