/// The Ukip leader has previously talked about “HIV tourism” in his latest book, The Purple Revolution, claiming that the Terrence Higgins Trust lobbied Cameron’s wife Samantha in order to secure treatment for “any foreigner with HIV courtesy of the British taxpayer”. ///

“I'm disappointed that you too have been taken in by Farage's sleight of hand.” I’ve not been taken in at all, sp. In fact, I've been taken in to a far lesser degree than those who blindly believe that the only way in which the UK can prosper is to allow hundreds of thousands of people annually to arrive and settle here. As I said in my previous post, I don’t...

If Nigel Farage wants to discuss health tourism, then he should base his argument on meaningful numbers. We have absolutely no way of determining how many of those he refers to are log-standing, tax-paying British citizens, who happen to be born abroad, and how many are simply screwing the system.

Not everyone has your intelligence, and my concern is that many people will conflate 'not born in the U.K.' with 'short term migrant'.

These are not synonyms.

I understand your concern, sp.

The short answer is for the government of the day to put a stop to health tourism (and indeed benefit tourism) by whatever means necessary. It is not beyond the wit of man to refuse to provide free treatment to people not entitled to it.I'm not talking about leaving a tourist who breaks his leg lying in the gutter until he produces a credit card or an insurance policy. Of course emergency treatment must be excepted. I'm talking about refusing to treat people who pitch up in the UK with pre-existing conditions (including pregnancy) whose sole aim is to be treated on the NHS before scuttling off back home or, worse still, remaining here for ongoing attention. Other countries manage it perfectly well. The fact is there is no political will to do so in the UK and the reason for that is that governments (of any persuasion) are absolutely terrified of appearing to be “nasty” when in fact they should be more terrified of upsetting the settled population already here and entitled to be so. That is what they are doing when they allow scarce resources to be abused by foreigners.

If they did that there would be no need for Mr Farage and his mates to raise these issues at all (with or without distortion and exaggeration) and parties like UKIP would have no purpose. But instead the genuine concerns of the electorate have been (and continue to be) brushed aside driving otherwise moderate voters to the extremes.

I agree with your points. I just wish Nigel was more careful with his wording.
N.J. Yup!

He said it on Thursday in front of millions:

Lumping immigrants who have been here for decades with 'health tourists'.
Wrong thread!
"No ! He was just playing his normal game of sounding the alarm, with a mixture of xenophobia and downright racism" - " But the kind of people that he is attracting are taken in, hook, line and sinker, due to their own inability to think clearly"

These comments are unbelievable and irresponsible but typical of the army of fake anti-racist who really don't have any clue what racism really is. Again, if this is a case of 'downright racism', will we see Mr Farage prosecuted or have you got it all wrong yet again.
