/// The Ukip leader has previously talked about “HIV tourism” in his latest book, The Purple Revolution, claiming that the Terrence Higgins Trust lobbied Cameron’s wife Samantha in order to secure treatment for “any foreigner with HIV courtesy of the British taxpayer”. ///

“I'm disappointed that you too have been taken in by Farage's sleight of hand.” I’ve not been taken in at all, sp. In fact, I've been taken in to a far lesser degree than those who blindly believe that the only way in which the UK can prosper is to allow hundreds of thousands of people annually to arrive and settle here. As I said in my previous post, I don’t...

well, here's the (current) top comment on that story, which perhaps you couldn't see:

"Farage was (as usual) twisting facts and adding 2+2 to make 5. The figure he gave referred to diagnoses, not treatments. All non-EU citizens have to pay for treatment. This is why most non-EU students have to take out insurance.
Hospitals have specialist accounting staff to collect payments or take insurance details from non-EU citizens who are receiving non-urgent treatment. There are some charities who try to cover these costs for those who cannot pay (eg Medical Aid for Refugees).
I suspect Farage knows all this perfectly well but knows that he can make gullible idiots (of whom we have a fine selection here) believe the lies he tells them.
I thought it was noticeable last night how Farage is so used to being adulated by misguided dummies that he didn't know how to react to being called out, just smirked in a vacant way."
No ! He was just playing his normal game of sounding the alarm, with a mixture of xenophobia and downright racism. He is a one trick pony, and his pony will just about manage to creep over the finishing line a few weeks time.

jno is correct here....Farage has one O Level and its in smirking. But the kind of people that he is attracting are taken in, hook, line and sinker, due to their own inability to think clearly. People like Farage have always attracted the same sort of people......look at the loony -tunes he has had to throw out of his own Party in the last few weeks. What a pity that there are not a few months before the Election, instead of a few weeks, because the longer it goes on, the more disorganised and farcical his Party will become.

But you can fool some of the people of the time, etc, etc.

AOG....give jno BA here !
jno; What he was referring to wasn't health tourism as such, which heaven knows is bad enough - Britain has been described as the 'world's maternity ward', pregnant women diagnosed with problems come in as tourists and go to A&E for delivery. In theory the cost should be refunded but it is impossible to collect.
What he was pointing to was the long-standing problem of women entering as badly needed nurses but in fact 60% having HIV themselves, and requiring treatment from the NHS, the very organisation they were coming, it was thought, to help.

It would appear by your 'flying elephants' answer that you are right there are a fine selection of gullible idiots on here.

I wonder if a certain Labour councillor will also throw out his son?

Much larger than the usual pig.
AOG...irrelavant.....Farage is continually losing his staff and members, and the principle reason for this is that they shouldn't have been picked in the first place.

He has told us in the past that all candidates now have to answer the question
" Am I Loony" The only conclusion we can draw is that an awful lot of them must have lied, and lied through their teeth.

Remember the one who said that the floods in Somerset was caused by the same sex marriage Bill !
Well said Nigel !
I think you will find that prople coming to this country are treated free for HIV. They 'settle here' then are able to get free treatment. As this treatment has to carry on for life, it costs a massive amount of money. We are supposed to have a "National" Health service not a "World Health Service. Get your facts right Mikey.

I'd like to apologize for the rudeness of my fellow socialists on this thread. I can only put it down to them being nowhere near as clever as they believe themselves to be. But then, you all appreciate that, don't you?
>>>Britain has been described as the 'world's maternity ward'

30 years ago I used to live in Hillingdon, near London, which contains Heathrow airport.

Even back then there was a massive problem of pregnant Asian women flying in to Heathrow from India etc, a few weeks before the baby was due (because of their flowing robes a pregnancy could be hidden).

They would then go to local hospital to have the baby. A while later they would then fly back "home".

It was a big problem 30 years ago, it is probably worse now as was have far more Asians with family members living abroad who take advantage of it.

And this is being paid for by MY taxes, YOUR taxes, everyone's taxes.

Then we all complain when we cant get a bed in a hospital.

We are being taken in on a MASSIVE scale in this country, being abuse by "so called" asylum seekers, refugees.

Is that the best argument that you can provide, the fact that he has threw out one or two less desirables, perhaps there are lessons that the other parties could learn?

But what has this got to do with health tourists?

Just another overused card played to try and belittle UKIP, just the same as when immigration is discussed out comes the card (as it did last night) yes but without immigration where would we find the doctors the nurses the health workers if we did not have immigration.

Well my reply to this would be, what proportion of the vast numbers of immigrants we have taken into this country, actually finish up being doctors, nurses, health workers?

A very, very small proportion that is obvious, so Farage is right in saying "adopt the Australian policy on immigration and only accept those who can offer a valuable contribution to this country".

If you are an immigrant living in this country and paying taxes etc then of course you should be treated for HIV or any other condition. If you live in another country and come here just to take advantage of our free health system then a big fat NO !

He should be concerned with the excess strain on all our resources, services, etc. when folk can wander in at the rate they do. We clearly have no ability to provide more resource quickly, certainly not as fast as the population can increase. It's not just the NHS, or HIV, it's everything a community needs.
I didn't think any of the party leaders addressed the problem of mass immigration or the illegals that get through our borders. They all appeared as a bunch of weak willed damp cloths. While our pensioners wait in corridors for beds to become available in hospitals or in home care services cut, they have paid into a system through their working years to expect at least some support in old age.

They make me sick to my stomach for not standing up for people who have supported this country through their working years, but let's not say this for fear of being branded racist and losing votes.
He may have a point, but the aim in these debates is to win more votes.

That gaffe probably lost him more votes that it gained so it was bad politics.
