But this sort of thing can occur when a party forms to only look after what they see as the interests of one small part of the kingdom. It's all very well for an individual constituency representative to vote on behalf of the constituents; it is another matter altogether when a party has primary interest in a particular region rather than the whole.
The sooner parties become an anachronism, the better.

I can't see they'd actually want another referendum. Surely it's a much better situation for them to be effectively controlling the UK government solely for the benefit of the minority of people north of the border, than it would be to actually achieve independence and have to pay for it all themselves.
If Ed Milband becomes PM there will not be a referendum. So what Ed would do is irrelevant. If there was a referendum under the Tories and the vote was to come out then actually I think the Scots would have a pretty good case for a referendum on independence. Another reason why Sturgeon probably would not be devastated if the Tories won the election and that happened. I think the scenario is unlikely
If the latest Ashcroft seats count is correct and the Tories and Labour end on 277 seats then even if Cameron somehow forms a government it is hard to see a referendum happening. In fact there would be such a hefty anti Tory majority in the house even with about 20 Lib Dems inside it is hard to see how they could govern
And believe me that is when Dave or his successor will come crawling to the Sturgeon :-)

I don't think the Scottish people will vote for independence. I think they'd rather have the situation I've described above, where they have the third largest party in a position to extract extra powers and money for themselves, without actually having to take the risk of real independence.
The SNP might win every seat in Scotland, but they can't decide to be independent. Only the people can do that, and they're not that stupid.
