That's how insurance works!

Slight problem with the idea of the safe deposit box company being responsible for the insurance ...

The contents of the boxes are supposed to be private, so how could they make a declaration as to the value of the insured property?

SOme of them did not insure b/c they would ahve had to declare ownership of the belongings and they didnt want

I was told that I could get insurance for various objects but I would have to keep them in a bank vault ( and so I didnt bother )

I wouldn't expect the people who manage my storage unit to be responsible for insuring my stuff, but I would expect them to compensate me if (for instance) someone got hold of the master keys and burgled the containers. My stuff stored in a container is the equivalent, IMO, of these guys storing their seriously valuable stuff in a secure facility.
