Or will they get behind the drive to bring the NHS into the 21st Century so it will survive and once again be the service it was originally intended to be?

These problems haven’t occurred in the past 3 weeks or the past 3 years. They have built up over many years, and PFI, which everyone seems to have forgotten about, is the main culprit. From the internet:
//Before the introduction of the PFI, investment in the NHS came through the government raising funds through borrowing, government bonds, or taxation. Hospital building and upgrading was funded through a government grant. Despite well-informed fears that the PFI might be a ‘Trojan horse’ in the privatisation of the health service, the first PFI hospital building contracts were signed under the New Labour government. //
That’s what you voted for Mikey. Having said that, the answer is not to be found in a tit for tat political squabble. All governments since the introduction of PFI are culpable. The NHS is grossly over-managed, it is financially squeezed by interest payments on loans, and even by enormous fines for failing to meet targets – and that is what needs to be addressed. The NHS won’t be privatised – that would spell political suicide for any government – but it does need to be run as a prosperous business is run – and that isn’t by wasting money.

Young, if you have not worked within the NHS then you have not seen the wastage that takes place, example, do not reuse the Crutches throw them away, the Government dish out the monies but cut it to the limit, but don't mind spending on agency's, Dave wants to start within his own back yard for the Country to follow his meaning, " We are all in it together" I have worked within the NHS & seen Wastage, my Daughter works in a Large A&E & seen the stupid wastage, another waste, when the hospital was built the land included the car park, so what do they do, hire it out when the Monies should be going back into the Hospital concerned.
The NHS is massively top heavy. There's too much management and too little accountability
Waste is everywhere. For instance, when a baby is delivered, a ready made delivery pack is used It contains several large sheets which are frequently not needed There is also a complete set of high quality surgical instruments. All these items are thrown away
Bring back Matron and sack the deskbound army

TWR, Yes, you are wrong. Apart from imagining that 'Dave' oversees every detail of everything on a personal level – a physical impossibility so a naively unrealistic expectation – auditors aren’t employed to assess areas where savings may be made – they’re employed to ensure accuracy in accounting – regardless of expenditure.
What they are saying Naomi, if they see wastage within their homes they address it, within the NHS there is Vast wastage, it is not addressed because top earners don't give a toss because it's not their money, the Government dishes out the money & is regulated & hopefully see that the money is spent correctly, this should be picked up by the people that are employed to see to it by the Government, Auditors Etc, It seems from what you say, these professional Nurses / Matrons have it wrong.

I think that's what most of us are saying – but top earners aren’t the only ones who are culpable. A little story for you. I had surgery in a private hospital and when my sister in law, a highly qualified NHS nurse, saw the itemised bill she was gobsmacked. Private hospitals account for everything – from an aspirin to a pair of rubber gloves. She hadn’t realised the cost of the stuff that NHS staff discard without a second thought. The NHS needs to be run along the same lines as successful businesses with people capable of running business in control.
