I'll have to revise my thoughts, then, DTC. He certainly knows more than me about such matters, but obviously not as much as you.
Incidentally, he is not alone. I don't know if you read the Torygraph or simply buy it for the crossword. If you do read it you will have noticed a series this week in the Business section entitled "Britain at the Crossroads". It provides extracts from a report called "Reform or Go" published by a group "Business for Britain". Their sentiments in may respects are similar to Mr Bootle's. More "cobblers", do doubt.
Just for the record, I have no objection to the UK belonging to any trading association. The more the merrier. What I object to is its membership of a political bloc whose clear aim is to create a United States of Europe where the wealth and prosperity of the richer nations is subsumed into the squalor of the poorer and where national governments become increasingly neutered in efforts to counter such consequences.

And the issue of "peace" courtesy of the EU is nonsense. As baz has pointed out, unrest is far more likely because of the EU. Apart from causing strife between its members because of its ridiculous policies and projects (free movement of people and the common currency) its ambitions beyond its current borders towards the east have seen that peace is by no means a certainty (witness the results of the EU's overtures to the Ukraine).
As far as influence goes, the UK has under 10% of the voting rights in the EU and the number of areas where it can exercise a veto are being rapidly diminished. This means most issues are now decided by qualified majority voting and the UK is constantly being outvoted on major issue of concern.

A very ambiguous speech - can be read many ways (including a warning to Scotland to stop the separatist ideas). No-one knows who wrote it, it may well not wholly represent ER's ideas. She is probably thinking of WW2 and how that must not happen again. Not necessarily an endorsement of the EU.
I think she was foolish to agree to read it in that form. We are, of course, talking about the same queen who signed all those IRA exonorations on the . Stop thinking of her as some form of Goddess, UK, she's a fallible human being!
