As I understand it, George Osborne's only "real" job was folding towels at the Ritz, Claridge's or somewhere similar and he's quite likely to be the next Tory leader. In other words, a Kinnock/Osborne battle would be a contest of equals in 2020!

Yes, I am serious TTT (up to the possibility of voting tactically in certain circumstances, or a surprising LibDem renaissance making them suddenly worth voting for). I'm not nearly as left-wing as some people on this site seem to think, and a Labour party as left-wing as Corbyn will take it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. I don't agree with all that many Tory policies at the moment, but I don't have any principles that forbid me from voting for them if it's right for the country. And it certainly would be if the alternative were a radically ultra-left madhouse.

Labour really has lost the plot. They cling so doggedly to an out-dated ideology that leaves them so far removed from the wishes and aspirations of ordinary people that I doubt they’ll ever recover. RIP.

What bothers me about that is that if true then it's unhealthy for the Tory party in the long run too. Winning constantly may be enjoyable but it also leaves them effectively unchallenged and no longer holdable to account. If Labour is dying, something will need to take its place and fast.

I don’t see a viable alternative – other than a party that embraces the Conservative ideology of aspiration, enterprise, and personal responsibility but will additionally halt uncontrolled immigration altogether and take us out of Europe. Mmmm …. I wonder who that might be? No chance – probably. Just my little joke. :o)

That's a good point Jim, even a Tory like me acknowledges that a decent opposition is necessary. Perhaps it's time for someone to start a new party, Labour clearly are unable to shake the reds out and dump that union connection. However as mikey will now doubt point out soon, this is a cyclic thing and I think they'll recover, eventually. last time they had to basically impersonate the Tories to get in, next time that may not be enough, I think they need to disband, break the union connection and reform as a real alternative. At the moment I can't see them winning for at least 2 more general elections.
