I'm not saying he is a savage but it makes you wonder why he was driving round with an easily accessible knife.
The circumstances indicate that at some predetermined time, this man must have put a knife in his car – why would anyone do that? It indicates a predisposition towards violence.

Then, after what police describe as a minor collision, he gets out of his car, with this knife – again a predetermined act indicating a propensity for violence, and then he kills a complete stranger in a frenzied attack.

It’s pointless looking for rational explanations for this – there clearly are none, but neither should we be willing to assume a ‘mad dog – put it down’ mentality which is not how civilised society works.

As you say, baffling behaviour, hopefully we will find out more eventually.

hence my use of the word 'normal' in the usual acceptance of the word retrochic
Retrochic
unless they are deemed criminally insane. no one yet has touched on the fact the alleged murder may be suffering from a psychotic mental disorder.

How is that a fact, R-chic?
Let him get convicted first shall we ?
Rsvp...simmering simmering simmering...under the surface...straw that broke the camels back...

But yes, why did he have a knife to start with.
Well that's rich considering your thread on Ken Clarke, mikey.
conviction first - but that is not AB sport......

"The night out at the AB pub included skill games." https://s3.amazonaws.com/lowres.cartoonstock.com/history-gallows-lynch-lynchings-hang-hanged-jcen286_low.jpg
Very very true, Talbot!!
This happened about five miles from where I live and whilst I can't imagine what this unfortunate man's family is going through, I have to say that I think the attacker must be mentally unbalanced, as this is very far from normal behaviour.
I'm not making excuses. He must be locked up for a very long time, until the authorities are sure that he is of no danger to anyone, but I think we'll find that his background was very damaged.
I've seen plenty of 'normal' people flip at road altercations, it's only a small step more to actually lash out and hit someone, doesn't need to be someone mentally ill or with terrible personal problems as a defence. Having the knife in hand is a different matter and suggests pre-meditated intent.
still saying 'normal people' ummmm- don't care what's simmering, simmering under the surface, lots of people have that but they don't go and knife a complete stranger. (stand corrected if it wasn't a complete stranger)
What was it Lloyd Grossman used to say?

'The judges have ruminated, cogitated and deliberated'

Let's save it all to the Defence barrister eh? We can speculate all day on a number of factors but there is only one place for close scrutiny of all the evidence and none of us here can properly comment.
very fair comment agchristie but this is an answer and discussion forum and we are merely answering and discussing the OP's question.
In this instance...Guilty...simple as that...all you bleeding heart liberals and your lets try him first, guilty until blah blah blah...what part of guilty dont you understand...hes going to get a trial at great cost to establish what is already known...

hopefully min 35 no parole....
well, for your sake, bazwillrun, I hope that you never have to come in front of a court when you and your God, assuming that you believe in one, knows that you are not guilty. 'Prove that a man is guilty - until that point, he isn't. the very fundamental of those scales of justice above the Old Bailey.....

Fear not though, the lynch mob has just arrived, followed by a wee spot of witch dunking and ISIL crucifixion perhaps - not a legal system that I want to live in.
Rsvp, also a fair comment though there are some wild thoughts!

One lesser point for Andy Hughes, why must the accused have placed the knife in the car? Just curious....

Life imprisonment - ie about 5 years. Then he'll stab someone else and get the book thrown at him. ie about 8 years.
If this is the wrong man and he is found not guilty then I think those in charge of the investigation should find alternative work...maybe a lollipop man or car park attendant.
Not being pedantic by the way Andy. If he didn't put the knife in the car then that casts doubt on the predisposition towards violence. We don't know how it got there or how long it had been in the vehicle or who it belonged to. Of course, he knew of its existence because he is alleged to have used it.
