I'm sure we will, just as we will pay for Greece.

Oh the joys of EU membership.

The French signed up to The Schengen Agreement, we didn't.
It's their Border they should sort it.
What about the effects on the residents of Calais, how do they feel about their Leaders failure to control the problem?

It must be hell for the Calais residents, cant imagine what it would be like having them in the town everyday.
It seems to be a demand of the French company that owns the Channel Tunnel rather than the French people themselves. I'm sure it knows what it can do with its suggestion.
Why is the channel tunnel owned by the frogs ?
As I’ve mentioned in the past I used to travel to Calais quite regularly, three or four times a year. I gave up a couple of years ago having witnessed one or two very dodgy episodes in and around the town. It’s a shame because, for a port, it is a nice little town with a few nice bars and eateries (if you know where to look) and one or two decent hotels for an overnighter.

Economically this shambles must have cost the town a fortune. Of course the French will blame anybody it suits them to for this situation. However the facts are straightforward. France decided to abandon its borders with its neighbours (and although the Schengen Agreement formalise this arrangement, effectively they had not been properly policed for years before that). The reason the migrants are in France is because the French have allowed them to enter, mainly from Italy. The latest “industrial action” in Calais is just a symptom of the French disease. No government wants to tackle it so it will go on. And, of course, France is one of our principle “partners” in Europe.
ymf; I don't think this has anything to do with EU membership, really. The Channel Tunnel is a private enterprise and it is the company who own the tunnel who are asking for the money - not the French Government. The tunnel would have happened with or without EU membership.
Sorry, OG, hadn't seen your 1353 post.

The fact the Police and strikers are all part of the same Union can't be helping!

///"The strike was going on and they are all in the same union, so I hear. There were no police about to help disperse them and it's getting worse out here."///

That's ok. No one ever does ;-)
NJ is absolutely right. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the absolute right to strike in France. No other sectors of the population will gainsay this no matter how inconvenienced they were. I got so tired of the explanation for things not working being 'C'est la greve.' That was it, no recourse. The French will not attempt to curtail the strikes at the Chunnel - unless very horrible lawlessness breaks out.
