Peter Pedant makes a very good point there. If you look through the gay press over the past year, you will see many incidents of trans and gay assaults that do not make the national press.
Unless there is a 'hook' to the story, then many, many assaults will go unreported.
And remember, it really can't be anything to do with our press being 'liberal leaning'. Look at newspaper circulation figures:

There is plenty of representation from the right (The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Express, The Daily Telegraph, The Times) - totalling 5,200,814 readers, compared to the left leaning publications (The Mirror, The Independent, The Guardian) - which combined has 1,512,507 readers.
I've left out the Daily Record (have no idea what that paper stands for) and the Daily Star (I know what that paper stands for, and there's usually two of them, with nipples).
