Regarding the 'Cecil' costume - you have to ponder whether the dreadful absence of taste and humour demonstrated by the person who designed it, is eclipsed by the dreadful absence of the same from anyone who would actually buy it, and the wear it in public.

gness, with terms being bandied about like "transphobic", clearly people are being offended.

youngmafbog - "Andy, I know you are going to find this hard to believe but there are more people in the world than you."

Thanks for the reminder - not needed, but thanks anyway.

"My comments were aimed at all those offended."

Perhaps you should make that clearer - if you appear to be replying to me - as I assumed you were - then I answer accordingly.

Of course, this confusion would not arise if you used my much derided cut-and-paste system, which cuts down 99% of such misunderstandings - which is why I use it.
@andy....please go back to the // .....it makes your posts much easier to follow ;)

For Funks Sake they are Halloween costumes. Where to you draw the line? stop people wearing masks of dead people with their throats cut in reverence of those murdered by ISIS? Stop one legged pirate costumes because you may offend those with one leg? Witch costumes may offend Pagan witches, masks of ugly bald people should be banned in case old bald men get offended. One day of the year where young adults can have a bit of a laugh, be 'offensive' and the costume thrown out and forgotten about by the next day. Except on AB of course where it will be discussed in detail as it is such an important subject -that of being offended of course.

These are accepted stereotypes, the Cecil costume is absolutely specific - even down to the dentist's tools in the pocket of the costume.

" ... stop people wearing masks of dead people with their throats cut in reverence of those murdered by ISIS?"

Maybe next year, but no sign of those that I know of so far.

"One day of the year where young adults can have a bit of a laugh, be 'offensive' and the costume thrown out and forgotten about by the next day. Except on AB of course where it will be discussed in detail as it is such an important subject -that of being offended of course."

Well, it's been a while coming, but finally someone has come up with the 'have a bit of a laugh' defence.

Just to be clear, I have not expressed offence at the costume - that would be because I am not offended.

My objection is the attempt at 'humour' based on the slaughter of an animal - I find no humour in that at all - and that is my only objection.

People have a right to buy and wear the costume, I have my right not to laugh at it, and to express my view, and ask others to do the same.

If you think it's 'a bit of a laugh', then we can agree to differ - but personally, I would prefer not to risk upsetting anyone in the name or 'humour' - there are myriad amusing costumes out there that don't have that effect.

Andy are you really that offended or are your posts academic essays on the paradox of ones capacity for humor and irony when faced with a keyboard and nothing else much to do?
It's really hard to get across sometimes that it's not being offended.... just a bit curious about the mindset of someone who'd wear this costume when they could be wearing a fun...interesting...amazing costume...

But I guess if someone only has one day of the year to have a laugh and be offensive we should be kind and not question why.

Cue...bored.....x

I refer you to my previous post - "Just to be clear, I have not expressed offence at the costume - that would be because I am not offended." (seventh paragraph from the top).

Hope that helps.

Absolutely - in my case I am not offended - it takes a seriously nasty issue to offend me - but as you say, I am curious about who designs, buys and wears these things.

Retrochic - "... the paradox of ones capacity for humor and irony ..."

Seriously?

You are citing 'irony' as a defence for this humourless nonsense?

Wow, that has made me laugh!
"My objection is the attempt at 'humour' based on the slaughter of an animal - I find no humour in that at all - and that is my only objection." Hear, hear andy ...
I've considered two scenarios, Andy........
One I open the door to a family... or attend a party...where a grown man is wearing this costume.....
Would I invite the family in for treats or socialise with him at the party.....I couldn't... I'd be a bit wary......

The second......I wear it taking the grandkids TOT.....what reaction would I get from my neighbours......pity I think.....x

Hi gness - I think that just about sums it up.
I must have the wrong costumes here -Caitlyn Jenner? yes to dress up as a man dressed as a woman is very scary and very offensive just look at Danny La Rue? Secondly -to dress up as a dentist with a cuddly lion who is pretending to be the jerk that slaughtered a lion -to me that makes a joke out of the man not the Act. Christ sometimes on here its best not to mention the word 'pin' in case there is a mass 'popping of peoples inflated egos's
