I have never been shy about dissing the Tories and everything they stand for, but if the present Tory administration is now changing its mind about giving sanctuary to refugees, than I am more than happy to give them my support.
But what a pity dave had to shamed into doing something. He of all people should know what it is like to lose a child.
Mikey, Oh do stop with the sentimentality for goodness sake! That child's death was a tragedy, as was that of his brother and his mother, but children and adults are dying in war torn countries every day and right now Europe has an unprecedented crisis on its hands that has to be addressed in the most sensible way it can be addressed - and sentimentality isn't the answer.
''Dave'' will be soooo grateful to mikey for his magnanimous endorsement, and of course the kind reminder that he once lost a beloved child. I am sure he had forgotten. He can also remind Samantha.
Naomi...so what is your answer then ? To push them back into the sea ?
I have already made the point many times, but a concerted and united response is needed. Conditions in places like Syria need to be improved, so that people no longer need to flee for their lives.
And Islamic extremism needs to tackled, with the same united response.
Mikey, My answer is certainly not to open our doors to all and sundry as you want us to do. I don't think you have any conception of the potential numbers involved here. If this continues - and unless we stop it now it will - Europe will be changed forever, and not for the better.
And Islamic extremism needs to tackled, with the same united response.
You must mean Islamic extremism abroad, because when the subject of Islamic extremism in the UK is discussed on here you are nowhere to be seen. If you do turn up it is to warn us of the rise in the Far Right!
The UK is not the first Safe Country they reach, but the majority of them seem to want to get here, our Benefit system seems to have a very strong 'Pull!'
gness, well, you’re right in one respect at least. You’re definitely slow on the uptake – you’re still planting disingenuous kisses at the end of your disparaging posts.
My God, Naomi's 'blinkered', what on earth are you then gness .... and she has a point about the silly constant kisses and hearts at the end of every sarcastic post !!
Regardless of other comments, and I can see you are having a bit of a ding-dong with others (not that I've read the thread): if Bob wishes to spend some of his money helping refugee families then that is his choice. Bully for him: except that there should be, limits on what he can and can't offer. He ought not be able to over-ride the correct procedures for immigration/refugees/asylum seekers. It is somewhat irresponsible to encourage folk to demand to come this far from their own country rather than remain with their fellow citizens playing by the rules and remaining in safe country near to their own; so that they can easily return once hostilities have ceased.
I, as a "leftie" are in the minority here. Most of you are Tory supporters, and its a Tory PM that is now saying that he will let in many more thousands. So perhaps some of you are now regretting you voted Tory in the first place ?
And Nomi, for the very last time, I have never advocated we "open our doors to all and sundry" but that we should show compassion and let in more than we have. That is all I am saying.
As indeed, other countries should do, including America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, all of which have much more room and resources than most European countries.
Show me where I have said that we should let in everybody ?
