Should Very Thin Models Be Banned From The Catwalk?

France has implemented a rule that models should have a BMI of at least 18 (which is bloody skinny to be honest).

When you see these ultra-skinny models, do you wince?

Do you get angry that young women are having this presented as a physical ideal?

Or, like me - do you think "This is no different from what Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton looked like in the 60s"?

Yes I do because hardly anyone is that size, more to the point anyone can design clothes that look OK on beanpoles, the skill lies in making normal women look good. that's why I always knock Victoria Beckham's designs because they are simplistic and are only shown on stick thin models. Most of her stuff would be very unflattering on even a 12-14.

One of the most popular stateside photographic models when I was a young adult in the late '60s was Cybil Shepard. She was applauded for her curviness. Maybe American models were healthier than Brits at the time.

I don't think they should be banned because they are too skinny any more than fat models should be banned for being large.

Do young girls actually look at them and want to be like them? In my experience they mostly seem to want to look an extra from Towie.

Marilyn was a US 16,not UK. I think the US size is bigger.

Larger sizes don't necessarily mean curvy, one size 18 women may be lovely and curvaceous, when another just looks fat. It's the body shape that's sexy not the size.

Rocky, I'd be amazed if MM was a standard UK size 18.
Unless she was corseted to hell....suppose that's possible...
Her era was that weird time in Hollywood with the breast obsession, think of Jayne Mansfield. If you calculate standard size on an inflated (in every sense) breast size, perhaps.....
But methinks a US 16 is a UK 14?

No as posted the US numbers are lower so a UK 16 is a US 14. What has changed considerably since Marilyn's day however is how they are measured. When I was growing up a UK 10 was bust 32, waist 22 and hips 32, it's much bigger now, probably by at least 4 inches. So a 16 back then is not what you picture as a 16 today.

I have a number of sports shirts (for Badminton) ranging from 12 to 18 and they all fit nicely. The larger sizes seem to be the more expensive ones like Slazenger and Lonsdale.

You have to try everything on these days.

I have a 9-yr-old ganddaughter. She is tall for her age, does sports and is slender (about right for her age). The last couple of times I have seen her she has asked for 'diet' this and that. I made a coffee sponge cake last time she was here and she nibbled tiny bits of crumbly cake. I am now really worried about her .

I wince at these models, in other words.

I would think they are more influenced by magazines and the popular girls at school.

The skinny models show off the clothes to their best advantage. The clothes flow without the model`s body getting in the way. The high street brands copy the clothes and they are the ones who should use models/mannequins that reflect real women
