Why can't the package holiday airlines take these Brits on a bus to Cairo Airport, and fly them home from there ? There isn't any restrictions for British planes to go to Cairo is there ?

I'm sorry, but try as I might I cannot evoke any sympathy for those who, despite all the evidence, insist on taking their holidays in Muslim countries.

// You wouldn't get me flying to Cairo on some sand filled turbo prop, even before all this happened :-) //

The internal Egypt Air flights between Sharm and Cairo use Boeing 737s.

At the moment there isn't any evidence that a bomb was smuggled on at Sharm, it is all just speculation.

Well I knew as I typed it someone would correct me on the aircraft - I was trying to give a flavour with a hint of humour, obviously failed.

Actually, I have always wanted to visit the historic sites in Upper Egypt.

I saw a documentary on the TV when I was a boy about moving the Abu Simbel temples, and was fascinated. Places like the Valley of Kings and Memphis look really interesting, but I'm not sure if I will ever see them now.

About 30 years ago, my Mum went on a Nile Cruise and didn't stop talking about it for ages !
Maybe because I take a robust approach to risk analysis and have no children I take a more fearless approach to my travel. I have been to a number of countries on holiday that have had FCO advisories of 'essential travel only' or 'do not travel' and have gone ahead with my plans. One was an out and out war zone and the others were subject to civil unrest or were under threat/attack from nearby nations upping the anti to claim territory. Despite observing IDF attacks, military road blocks and military defence points I didn't let any of it spoil my time of enjoying a different culture.

Each to their own.
One typo which spell-check will not save you from is 'cabotage'. I was thinking this a few days ago and thought about a spell check fails thread. Given the circumstances, I'm glad I didn't.

Flights resuming tomorrow:

The journey across the Sinai to Cairo is a long one, we did it many years ago. Were I in their position, I would rather stay put and then fly back from Sharm with security support from the British government than cross the Sinai in a moving target. The travel companies presumably have many empty rooms they've paid for, unoccupied now that no-one is going out, maybe they could put the stranded families in those.

We don't know if there is any evidence or not. There is "something" which has got people worried

The airlines that are picking people up are bringing them home without their baggage. They will probably return cater from the UK and may fly via somewhere like Cairo where they can refuel so that they can just touch and go at Sharm.
i really have no sympathy for them. kids yes but parents should know never to visit these islamic countries.
lets have another go shall we....
I cannot understand why any sane person would go to a Forest Gump like this.

Thanks for that info, mikey
Sharm is not a Forest Gump. I've always had a great time there, and the diving is spectacular.
If the only reason you choose to not go is because it is a muslim country, then the Forest Gump analogy probably best applies to yourself.
I'm so pleased that I approach my travels with an open mind.

I take a risk crossing the road every day, getting in my car and driving 100 miles, taking a holiday is much the same to me.

Divebuddy,
I'm not a serious diver. But just wading into the Sea from my hotel in Narma Bay is a visual feast - Well, compared to Prestatyn.
I am a forest gump, gromit? PMSL, I'm not a place!
