Be sensible they are not likely to land on any beaches north of Felixstowe to the East, and north of Lands End to the West.
They will if patrols are set up elsewhere. It would just force the problem North.
well if they land in Hartlepool ( oop north) they may get more than they bargained for......

It is a good job we didn't have this 'what's the use' attitude during WW2.
What has WW2 got to do with it?

/// And that would be paid for by...........? ///

The defence budget of course, and when this got a little low it could always be topped up with some from the vast amount of foreign aid, It could be classed as 'British Aid'.
Retrochic, not sure how good your UK geography is but there is a little thing called the East Coast with Norfolk and Suffolk on it, within easy distance of the mainland Europe. So its going to take a little more than the homeguard looking after the Kent coast!!

Glad you bought WW2 into it anotheroldgit because without the UK taking in refugees a lot more people would have died!

We are not taking about refugees, these are illegal immigrants that are invading our country.
It was a long time ago, AOG, you can't keep harping back to it.
ANOTHEOLDGIT,

"Be sensible they are not likely to land on any beaches north of Felixstowe to the East, and north of Lands End to the West."

If resources are concentrated on certain areas of the coast, would a sensible smuggler not choose a landing outwith those areas?
Has anyone assessed the risk and possible numbers involved?

If it costs £10,000 a time to transport them from Calais to Deal on the Kent coast imagine the cost to take them further north?

It is not a matter of "harping back to it", but it is a matter of learning lessons from it.
No it doesn't. That's what this bloke is reputed to 'charge'. Charge and cost aren't the same thing AOG. I'm sure a boat load worth £140k a trip would incentivise Mssr Turpin to go a little further.
//It is not a matter of "harping back to it", but it is a matter of learning lessons from it. //

so we should help others that are being oppressed then
I am finding it difficult to believe that the OP question was serious.

Doesn't maritime type services, coastguard or whatever, already check shipping in the channel and spot suspicious craft ? Or is this too difficult to do ?
ANOTHEOLDGIT, if it meant more chance of evading the authorities would folk not pay more?
