//perhaps she should have gone to the Police instead ?//
Many of these ladies wouldn’t consider going to the police – in fact I’d hazard a guess that they are unaware of that option. Within Islam it is permissible for a man to hit his disobedient wife – in fact it’s openly recommended - and since women are raised from birth to depend upon the dubious wisdom of the men surrounding them it wouldn’t occur to them to do otherwise. I recall reading on an ‘Ask the Imam’ website a post from a very concerned pregnant lady who asked whether or not she should follow the advice of her midwife – advice which she thought might be ’un-Islamic’. Fortunately, after bleating on about Allah, Mohammed, etc., for a while, the Imam advised her, in that instance, to do as her midwife recommended. There are many cases of men preventing women from receiving medical and dental treatment simply because the doctor happens to be male, so this perception and acceptance by both men and women that females are lesser mortals incapable of making their own decisions is really incredibly dangerous to them. A whole change of culture is required here – but since this abuse emanates directly from highly respected Islamic literature that is deemed beyond criticism, I can’t see it happening, so I’m at a loss to know what the government can do about it.
