They must have seen the Paris murders as a godsend and hoped it would lead to an election breakthrough. The fact that it didn't speaks well of the inate good sense of the French electorate.

pinning their hopes on the presidential election now, and they may do well (didn't they beat the Socialist candidate two or three elections ago?). They think the public will rise in indignation over the tactical voting that... the public... have just indulged in.

Well, maybe. I don't personally think either Le Pen or Trump will be president of anything in a couple of years.

But it's the public themselves of course who do the tactical voting, as they did in 2002 when Chirac saw off Le Pen senior
Socialists?
We often moan about our FPTP system. This sort of thing gives you food for thought.
yes, I did try to emphasise that, ichkeria. Whether the same public vote the same way in a different sort of election remains an open question, though.

// We often moan about our FPTP system. This sort of thing gives you food for thought.//

like you know they cant tactically vote in a FPTP system,,,, o yeah
The vote has brought out, in order to succeed, a large group of Muslims, she is neither "far right" (whatever that means) nor speaking anything but common sense. if you disagree, please watch this and tell me what you think is wrong with what she says;
but youll never convince the leftie fascists on here or anywhere else....as long as can destroy the white majority of our country thats all they care about
The French seem to have come to their senses at last, and rejected the far-right.
Khandro, I see nothing wrong in what she says. People bang on about the dangers of the 'far right', completely oblivious to the reality that fundamentalist Islam is as far right as it goes. I'm convinced they really don't understand what they are supporting.

The French system is not entirely unlike first past the post, in that you only need to top the list in round two to get a 'bonus' and quite a hefty one at that.
The system also encourages tactical voting because after the first round you get a very accurate and obvious 'opinion poll' for round 2 if appropriate.
And there is nothing wrong with tactical voting is there? If you didn't vote FN in round one you are probably not going to do so in round two, so naturally if you strongly oppose them you may be tempted to use your vote to stop them. Front National, like it or not, are a divisive element and so they will attract strong opinion one way or the other. It is interesting to note that they also did badly in regions where a party list was not tactically withdrawn.

Well said Sandy !
Sheesh!
We don't agree with you Naomi....sorry !
Question Author
Yes Sandy. And actually they had 27% in round one, which while more than anyone else, is actually little more than one in four of the turnout. People obviously saw to it that they'd not get their noses in front in their region. (And don't forget there'd be votes to spare from eliminated lists, all of which were probably FN-hostile). Heartening indeed
Sandy; //They must have seen the Paris murders as a godsend//

THAT is one of the most disreputable things I have seen on AB, outrageous!
and endorsed by mikey too. You should both be ashamed of yourselves!!!!
.

wha ? yeah for stating the bleeding obvious ?
Report it, then.
Here in NI we had for years the 'politics of the last atrocity'. The NF must have though they'd profit from the aftermath of the kilings.
Question Author
It's a bit hypocritical to have a go at sandy for suggesting that the FN might have seen the Paris attacks as an electoral gift. when there is so much vilification here of anyone who doesn't speak condemn or tar all Moslems with a single brush. That is a collective criticism of what appears sometimes to ee the AB body politic, and not a personal attack

Anyway, it's good enough for me :-)
