At the risk of being controversial! Yes David Bowie was a Music Legend. We have lost many great musicians and other celebs. But why has the media gone overboard on DB, saying everyone will be devastated by his passing etc etc. It's top story all over the place. He was liked by many I know, but certainly not by everybody I feel sure.

He deserved his place in Pop History but......................

I wondered that too countrykid
What a mean post.
There are certain characters in popular culture that seem to transcend simply being musicians (in this case) and have a deeper effect on people.

Elvis,Lennon, Michael Jackson are some - Bowie was a huge influence in many ways, his music being just one.

///He deserved his place in Pop History but///

but nothing, he earned his place, you are very mean-spirited imo.
I'm more interested in the fact that Angie Bowie is remaining in the Celebrity Big Brother house. Ok, so they didn't get along, but they had a child together, and why is she regarded as a "celebrity"? Could it be because of her name? Hmmmm? Have a shred of decency woman, for flip's sake.

I don't think so. I agree with the poster. Just sat in a pub with my wife for last 2 1/2 hours . Non stop David Bowie and the TVs were muted so you couldn't here the music clips anyway.Any one would think the Queen had died fgs. He was an entertainer.Nice man I am sure but wow. People younger than him have died of cancer and his death won't change the world .
it only happened today and nobody even knew he was ill. You'd find it hard to find any adult who hasn't heard of him and wasn't at least surprised at the news, what an amazing mark for a human to make in their life.

I'm watching TV and he's not on at all unless I look by the way.
I don`t think there is a media frenzy and I don`t think the media has gone overboard. This guy was one of the icons of pop history. I certainly wouldn`t class him as another "celeb". I do think the term "devastated" is a little overused though - that term should be reserved for his family and loved ones.
I didn't like him. It was the voice, I didn't like but I can see that he had a lot of adoring fans who did appreciate what he did. I'm not sure that he was as influential as the BBC news, tonight, seemed to be saying. Did he actually change the face of Britain?
I loved his music and he was part of my teenage life. I'm not normally emotional about these things but felt emotional as I heard the news and some of his music today. It was similar to the deaths of Elvis, John Lennon or Freddie Mercury for me.. It may mean less to some but the 'frenzy' will only last a day or two and I hope those that don't care for it can respect the wishes of those who do want to be reminded, for 24 hours maybe, of an important part of out lives
I think the problem here is there has been more media frenzy over David Bowie than Elvis, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and J F Kennedy added together.
He has only just died though so it stands to reason that it will be in the news today.
Really? I cannot see how rated on less than a days news that can be so.
My reply was to Vulcan.
Yes, memories fade after 20-50 years, vulcan so it may seem that way today.
mamy, if that is addressed to me I am referring to the first day of coverage.
There is no way I can dispute your findings without great research but I do doubt it.
Corrie's still on tonight. EastEnders is on. I guess Big Brother will still be on. The FA Cup draw was still shown live.
Hardly a frenzy
pretty much the same as for Lennon as I recall, mamya - allowing for the much more limited range of media in those days, they were just as saturated. As for JFK, I think vulcan's memory may be fading a bit, but that was near-total.

In fact it's still going on

I could not possibly count the hours of joy David Bowie has given me through listening to his music. The hours of joy the Queen as given me I can ... Zero!
