Eddie, they have to be able to be 'in touch' with those that are going to help them, the first problem for many will be being prevented from doing that by their menfolk.

There are plenty of English speaking women and men who are controlled by their opposites.

£20 million of British Taxpayers money could be better spent on more deserving projects, we give these people enough, accommodation, education, a health service, interpreters, in some countries they have to pay for their own interpreters.

I thought Dave did quite well on the Radio actually Mikey - usually he's pitiful. He did give a reason for cutting the program previously (to find more cash) and reiterated that the programme now only focused on women "in danger of isolation", whereas previously it was wider reaching.

I can only assume that you have very limited knowledge of the usual situation of a 'traditional ' Muslim female.
They are intentionally isolated in the family house, not allowed out unless a male is with them. They are actively discouraged from learning English as the men fear that a woman with a good grasp of English will be able to understand what she sees on TV and reads in the papers . This would give them knowledge that in the western world women are equal to men. That they can go out into the world and get jobs where they are working along side men as equals.
I have more knowledge of this subject than most others on AB. I worked in Saudi Arabia for 3 years, one of my main jobs was teaching Saudi Muslim females to be Laboratory technicians. When I worked with them were in ordinary western clothes no veil.They trusted me and told me about their home life.

The practice does spill over into other cultures in backward areas of the world, but it is not supported by Christianity as it is supported by Islam. In those obscure instances it really is a cultural issue. How many Christian women do you think turn up at the help agencies? Just something you might like to think about before you mislead the reader again. Denial never cured the problem.

A Muslim couple with a young child moved in a few doors away last year. The husband goes out in his car several times a day, but we never see the wife or child leave the house except for once or twice a month when they all get in the car together. The husband appears to be the only one bringing home shopping.
A closer neighbour said she had tried saying 'hello' over the garden wall when the wife had been putting out washing. The woman had pulled her headscarf tighter and not replied. The neighbour assumed the wife spoke no English.
I disproved this lack of English theory last year. Coming home I saw my cat sitting on the Muslim family's front garden wall. As I went to pick him up he jumped down into the garden. There is no gate so I took a step or two into the garden to grab him. There was a scream from inside the house and the child, a girl of about three banging on the window. Before I could leave the garden with my cat the front door opened and the woman, in reasonable English, demanded to know what I was doing. The child was going berserk, screaming in another language and pointing to the cat. She broke away from the woman and rushed towards me wanting to touch the cat. The mother dragged her back inside and slammed the front door. I could still hear the child screaming inside the house.
What hope is there for that little girl to integrate when she starts school if she is not even allowed out of the house for a walk or to stroke a cat?

How do you suggest they go from being intentionally isolated in the family house to being in a position to learn English when their menfolk don't want them to?

In helping these isolated women become more integrated into wider society are we not also helping ourselves? When they can see and enjoy the benefits of our liberal society they'll be able to pass that appreciation on to their children.
