If the crime was committed when the offender was still a 'young offender' but the trial was not until they are out of the age range , they will be sentenced as if they were still a 'young offender'.

A 'Young Offenders Institute' how ever takes offenders up to 20 years of age, so this person is in the correct age range.

One can only hope that their fellow inmates remain calm and rational when they hear of the arrival of serial child molesters in their midst.
It would be a sad indictment on the inability of the penal reform system to protect all of them for every minute of every day if at some point in their sentences serious injury or worse befell these heartless beasts.

Can we get this straight, please. It has troubled me for some time.
Legal age for marrying and consent to consensual sex is 16. Legal voting age is 18. YET you remain a 'young offender' until the age of 21?

Please, please can we set an age for being grown up in all things. I would set 21 for marriage, voting, sex etc., etc..

jourdain2. It is only where you serve your sentence that differers for offenders between 16 and 21. The law and the sentencing is the same.
If you had been inside an adult prison. you would not want a person under 21 to be subject to it no matter what they had done.Remember I have worked as a tutor inside a jail, I taught a number of murderers! 90% of them are just like you and me!

The law regarding the punishment of young offenders has changed many times. Prior to 1970 it was borstal (for older boys) or approved school for those of school age (15). No one under 18 could be hanged, and in the last century there were only 4 cases of 18 year olds being hanged, the last in 1960. Normally an 18 year old sentenced to death for a crime committed before his 19th birthday was reprieved, but there were exceptions, see R v Forsyth, 1960.
