should commerce be allowed to be stifled by what is essentially religious dogma? if yes, should restricted hours be extended to accommodate the sabbaths and prayer days of other religions?

It should have nothing to do with religion. (or the government, come to that)

ANOTHEOLDGIT I am neither not quick on the uptake nor am I a mind reader so I asked a simple question. Perhaps there are millions of folk who want to buy something on the spur of the moment and are glad the shops are open on a Sunday. No-one is forced to buy things on a Sunday but why should they not be allowed the option?
Id like to see them open less on a Sunday, only people that have never or don't work in retail want them open longer, I remember we would be open from 10am - 4:30 pm and you would still get people running in at 4:29 (bear in mind this was a large garden centre and not a supermarket.) or wandering around an browsing after 4:30 when there had been numerous tannoys since 4:15 asking people to make there way to the tills as the store is closing, and most of these people had been there for at least a couple of hours.

Some people are very selfish.

You should be jolly grateful you have a job. And do as you're told.
you sound like one of my ex-customer svejk, everyone should spend a year in retail or a customer facing business and experience some really rude people, try serving someone whilst they are on their mobile phone, I actually stopped serving them until they ended the call.

Dave.
The shop workers deserve a day away from their labours.
Church leaders work on Sundays. If others want to shop it's none of their business.
Practice what they preach eh Naomi?

if you accept that, then why sunday? why should the christian special day be afforded legal protection and not the special days of other religions?
Well, it's a bit rich. ;o)
From mrblear. ## Jewish Sabbath is Saturday so that makes three days in all we couldn't shop. ##

And the other four, most are at work!
// why should the christian special day be afforded legal protection and not the special days of other religions? //

There's a thought. Now if we can sort through all the religions and find those that have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as their Sabbath, none of us will have to work at all. Whoopeee!
If there is to be a day when working families can be together then Sunday is as good as any. The fact that it's of significance to Christians isn't that important.
Not all the population work Monday to Friday, though, Sandy. It's probably a minority that actually do. The church needs to learn some tolerance.
Please note the following as the following eleminates a few more days,

Baha'i Religion:

Commerce and work are to be suspended on the following days: Naw Ruz, First Day of Ridvan, Ninth Day of Ridvan, Twelfth Day of Ridvan, Declaration of the Bab, Ascension of Baha'u'llah, Martyrdom of Bab, Birth of the Bab, Birth of Baha'u'llah.
We have Sunday shopping and have had it for several years. The supermarkets, Boots etc are all open but probably at reduced hours.

Gotta love the hypocrisy of the pious aintcha?

Only the other week, on a Sunday, a customer had the cheek to berate me stating that I should have been in church as he'd just been- he wasn't too chuffed when I pointed out that if I had have been I wouldn't be able to serve him his fags.
Perhaps AB should close down on 'Holy' days.
Perhaps churches should have the same opening hours as shops.
