It's a win/win situation. The gold medal winners will be taken in by the Americans and given scholarships, the silver winners will go to Russia and the bronze to China. The also rans will end up in Europe but as we are about to leave, that won't affect us.

How satisfying it would be, though, to see a refugee team, and no Russian team, especially given that it looks as though they had the head of their anti-doping agency murdered - and possibly the one before him as well - to avoid embarrassing revelations.

We used to complain that the Olympics were too political. Arguably having non-aligned teams is less political.
