What Are Your Feeling On The Sunday Trading Laws?

Have we got it just about right, or do you think that shops should be allowed to open longer?

If we can shop all day on the Internet on Sundays, and we can go for a KFC, McDonalds all day on Sunday, why can't we go and buy an Ikea sofa, or a John Lewis lampshade or a pack of AA batteries from our local hardware store all day?

Are the Sunday trading hours out of date?

Loads of people work Sundays, it doesn't mean a 7 day working week.

I don't see the 'compete with the Net' argument. The stores have that problem all week; it's to do with prices/overheads/etc. not Sunday opening to any great extent. Mail/Net order has one set of strengths/weaknesses; stores a different set.

Six hours on Sundays is plenty, in many countries shops are not allowed to open at all. There seems to be no end to some people's need for what they see as "freedom of choice"; If 6, then why not twelve or even 24? Then it will be; "24 hours, 7 days a week just isn't enough".

Sunday is my only day off so the only day I get to shop, have a family dinner and watch sport.
A 6 hours window can actually be difficult when I rely on public transport. I prefer to eat out on a Sunday as it's my day off and often somwhere I can watch the football or rugby and that is not on our High St.
So yes it is outdated, shop workers aren't the only one's who work a lot and no one has suggested they all work 7 days a week.

We do a weekly shop on a Sat. afternoon, that leaves Sat. evening and Sun. to relax/socialise. It would make no difference whatsoever if shops opened all day on Sun. we wouldn't be using them.

Since i was a child and remains so to this day, Sunday has been a boring day.
Taking the wife, or family shopping with lunch thrown in would be classed as a sort of .."treat".......so i am disappointed that Sunday shopping wasn't voted in.

I have to work on a Sunday. I don't think shopping should be restricted particularly. I think the current 10-4 hours are about right.
As Pixie said earlier, no one has to work 7 days a week.

I use to work in retail and had to work every other sunday and was glad of the shorter day, the only people that want longer opening hours are the the store owners and people that have never worked in retail, some of the people on here would soon moan if their boss told them that their new hours involved sunday working.

When you work on a sunday its rare that you get time with your family.

And some people can be very selfish, I use to work in a VERY large garden centre and the number of people that would wander in at 4:25 when we were closing at 4:30 and walk in the opposite direction to the tills, these people would still be making no effort to leave the store a 4:45, very very selfish.
