It is easy to see the vast differences in other cultures, simply because they resonate as being unlike what we know.
But for every culture that has systems in place that we find odd, or wrong, we have systems that seem perfectly normal and acceptable to us, that others would find odd or disturbing.
What we should try and avoid is dealing in absolutes and stereotypes.
To say that all Muslim men treat their women badly is as bad as saying that all European men are chauvinistic sex pests. It has to be about nuances, and degrees, and a willingness to accept that because we think something is wrong does not automatically make it so - just different from us, which is not the same thing.
We should beware of making ourselves the world's moral guardians and inflicting what we think best on people who don't happen to agree with us.
