And so it should be taken out of government's hands and the money that people use to fund it should be under their control.
Imagine the cost savings if these payments went directly from employees into the funds of their choice.
Why should the state manage these pensions, when we could do it ourselves?

I was just pointing out that sp was not suggesting taking pensions away from those who currently get them. He was saying going forward that those who pay for pensions should get them and those that don't shouldn't. If you understood that then that's fine but i didn't see how your objection was relevant
And that's exactly what is wrong with the suggestion sp. The government is in place to benefit society so ensuring sufficient income to live on is it's responsibility. Individuals are not all responsible people. Commercial concerns are only interested in what profit they can make out of folk. This is not something that ought to be passed over, it is a vital responsibility of a caring society to cover for itself. Next someone is going to suggest we pass all welfare issues to private concerns. They're already trying with prisons: and not got health care sorted properly yet either.
Not if the profit goes into the hands of the shareholders. No doubt you'll be responsible for, and paying for your own personal military too then. Not everyone is capable of being as responsible as you, and many that are may not manage to accumulate the resource needed. But of course this far right wing suggestion still won't provide more finance for outseas aid since tax collection would have to drop to allow folk to put money into a private and possibly failing pension scheme instead.
Fair enough. I wasn't commenting on the aid issue. I was pointing out that your "My Dad for example paid his NI for all his long working life so he could get a dencent pension in retirement (in his 70's) and why shouldn't he have ....." response to sp seemed to be based on a misunderstanding of his suggestion, so i was suggesting you re-read his comment.
As I said earlier, absolutely behind you SP. I also agree that pushing companies to pay for private medical and not taxing people at 40% for the privilege is the way forward (or individuals to pay net of tax). That way many people would be removed from the NHS waiting lists and the NHS would thus improve. So no two tier system.
Not sure where people are coming from banging on about its paid for when you clearly state that it would only apply going forward.
A State pension is not sustainable, unless we start retiring at 85.

What was that about Africa, sp?
