I once heard that the main explanation for "holiday tummy" is that all countries' tap water has a certain level of bacteria in it but we build up a resistance to exposure to our local strain and have no bother, on home turf. First night of the holiday and we rinse out toothpaste or absent-mindedly sip from the tap, despite advice to stick to bottled...

Or the other classic is the ice in the drinks, made from the same local tap water (unless advertised otherwise) or the salad veg, rinsed under the tap.


Fans of Mythbusters may recall the episode where they left brand-new toothbrushes within 10 ft of a lavatory, for a week and then tested the (still unused) toothbrushes for faecal bacteria. With positive results!

Without having read the article, yet, I gather that a bottle was commuting from the lav to the kitchen sink. Presumably, back-splashes from the act of filling the bottle were landing on kitchen surfaces, so it needn't have been unclean hands which were to blame.

Whilst on the subject of splashes, who wants to try the challenge of surrounding their lav with a large area of kitchen towel sheets and see how long it remains spotless?

(This is aimed at whoever it was who thought carpets are better than linoleum, in domestic lavs).

I have never thought very highly of Dyson's inventions anyway. We own two of his complicated vacuum cleaners on which I've had to repair broken plastic injected parts. He also lost a lot of brownie points when he moved his factories to the far east.

However vacuum cleaning a carpet, whatever the make of cleaner, is more hygienic than sloshing around vinyl tiles with a mop and bucket as I've seen done in UK hospitals.

Never heard of Dettol, Dettox, or bleach, then?

Admittedly, vacuuming will remove all the dead skin cells, grit and other powdery substances from the soles of your footwear but cannot guarantee the removal of well entrenched bacteria. However, in order for it to be that well protected from suction, they'd be so deep in the weave that your fingers wouldn't come into direct contact with them.

The problem for hospitals is that they have to deal, routinely, with fluid spillages. Bloodstains would ruin any carpet and using matching red, to avert such problems, would only make life impossible for the blood cleanup team.

Yuk, yuk, yuk and I love Indian takeaways too and in fact we had one the weekend before last ! This has put me off forever. What culture says you don't use toilet paper for God's sake !!!
