That suggests that we don’t have our own freedom to rule – which of course we don’t. Is that what you’re saying – and is that what you’re advocating?

No I'm not saying that at all, Naomi. I'm trying to present the hypocrisy of the other side's argument, for whom "freedom to rule oneself" is apparently only important when it's our freedom that is (supposedly) destroyed; whereas with former colonies they should apparently be grateful that their freedom was taken away from them, and begging for us to take that freedom away once more.

Obviously this position is not shared by everyone, or even most, within Brexit, but it's still staggering to see the double standards there. How this affects my own position depends largely on whether or not you're trying to deflect this point rather than address it, as svejk has done for instance.

Jim, It’s not realistic to compare this country to the third world. The countries that wanted their freedom back have got it back. There are people who say they were better off before that freedom was granted, and I think some of them were. I don’t, however, see how we are better off under European rule. The analogy doesn't work.
