The anti-Semites within his party aren’t likely to change their opinions, so is this just an attempt to calm the much-muddied waters by shutting them up?

Cant see he can do much. He should have acted quicker and stamped on it this time.

The problem is, I suspect he has sympathies with them as those on the left mostly support Hamas.
The problem for Corbyn is that it is impossible for him to act fast enough. He needs to replace the disloyal Blairite MPs.

After the disastrous local election results, he should expell Mann, Danczuk and half a dozen other MPs, who he can scapegoat as causing the failure, and force a string of by-elections. He should parachute in (as Blair did) sympathetic Corbynites as the official Labour candidate. That will send the right message to the rebellious MPs. Of course that won't happen, because Corbyn isn't brave enough.
booting them out of the party won't force bye elections gromit.
The larger problem is not deciding whether to condemn anti-Semitism, or what to do when it's discovered, it's about having an objective measure of deciding what constitutes anti-Semitism. The recent furore being a case in point where folk are claiming they and everyone they speak to is outraged when clearly there was little to be outraged at.
Labour MP John Mann chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group against Antisemitism. unfortunately he does not seem to know what it is, and he cannot tell the difference between it and disagreeing with Israel foreign policy.

So any antisemitism plan is bound to fail when MPs do not understand what antisemitism is.
If he is genuine then I assume he believes Ken's statement is implying that the Jews are no better than Hitler. If that really was his interpretation, then I think that would be irrational. Even widely different camps can sometimes find common aims.
I think that that was what he meant. The agreement referred to was made shortly after Hitler came to power and before he was perceived as a monster.
Why oh why oh why are we sticking with 'antisemitism' when semitophobia is much more 21st century?
It works for everything else.
The term 'semite' is not limited exclusively to Jews; it also includes Arabs and others who speak a semitic language.
so we'll have to go with Judaophobia.
No real point in doing a dictionary dance though is there, jackdaw?
Anti semitic = hating Jews and no amount of chat's going to change that now.
As a Scot, I should have thought 'semitism' was a belief in wearing a vest!
Terrasanctophobia, against people in the Holy Land?
I like QM's reply. An old word I've not heard for years, also used in NE England. Semmit, an undershirt or vest.
