Anne....yes, probably right, but the tobacco industry has to recruit new smokers all the time, to replace the ones that it is killing. Maybe these plain packages will help to stop people from starting in the first place.

Its got to be worth a try. And most smokers start when they are children, not adults.

Does anybody remember those irritating adverts for Embassy Regal back in the 90's....the ones that featured "Reg"......they became a popular icon amongst school kids and were eventually banned.

The idea is to discourage children from starting to smoke by making the packs less attractive and outlawing small packs of less than 20. Packs of 10 are the most often purchased by under 18's due to the lower price.

There have been many surveys and they all say that the age over 98% of people start to smoke is 12 to 18. Stop them starting and within 20 to 30 years there will be no smokers as they will have been killed by their habit!

Children/young children don't start smoking by purchasing a pack of 20. They get cigarettes from their friends/siblings/ parents. By the time they have the money of their own, many are adicted. Or just want to do what their friends are doing. IMO.

ummmm, yes but it makes it that bit more difficult.
There is a proposal to make it law to sell cigarettes cartons of 200 only , so you need £75 to £95 to buy any!

Bit rich to commend the EU on it's efforts with regards to tobacco sales.Practically all other EU states take less local duty for the tobacco in their countries than the UK.Why do you think hundreds of Brits take day trips to ,what was, a little known place in Belgium called Adenkerke????

Not much merit in banning the advertising of e-cigs when our medical profession is trying to convert smokers to them.

e cigs are much better than tobacco but better still is no cigs at all! That is the argument, not sure I agree with it though.
