For years now, I forget how many, Canadian cigarette packs have had these dire warnings and pictures on them. Cigarettes are not even on display in the stores: They are kept on shelves or cupboards with doors on them.

stuey, here tobacco products have to stored in a closed cupboard with no advertising, and the shop assistants are not even permitted to tell you what brands they stock.

No Brand name at all would be problematic to the vendor when asked for a specific product, so yes a minimum height labelling.

TTT.......The tobacco industry will fight tooth and nail until its last, dying death.

That is what it has been doing since the link between smoking and cancer was proved by Sir Richard Doll, in the 1950's. I can recall that the Tobacco Industry, in the form of FOREST, its propaganda wing which it funds, were still trying to deny the link as recently as the early 90's.

What I fail to understand is why our Government takes any notice whatsoever of the industry, when it comes to making laws. Advertising was eventually outlawed, but only after years of delaying tactics. As boys, my brothers and myself played with John Player Special toy racing cars in the 60's and 70's, a very effective form of advertising !

Our Government should go ahead and pass legislation with immediate effect.

they started off by saying that the plain packaging would increase sales, by some twisted logic or other but when some politician pointed out that if that was true they should support it they had to go away for a re thimk! PMSL

On average in Wales, only about 20% of adults still smoke. This has come down over the years, although the decline has reduced somewhat in recent years.

Most mornings, I pass the entrance to my local primary school, on the way to the shops here in the village. A large proportion of the (mainly mothers) taking their kids to school are still puffing away, standing outside the gates.

The Head Teacher stopped them from coming into the school grounds a few years ago, which caused lots of outrage and there was a great deal of waving of cigarettes around in the air I noticed.

Smoking prevalence rates amongst the less well-off population are significantly greater than those of the more affluent population and its these kind of people that seem to be the most reluctant to stop smoking.
