Donald Trump has said that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel had "an absolute conflict" in presiding over the litigation on the Trump University case, given that he was "of Mexican heritage" and a member of a Latino lawyers' association.

Mr. Trump said the background of the judge, who was born in Indiana to Mexican immigrants, was relevant because of his campaign stance against illegal immigration and his pledge to seal the southern U.S. border. "I'm building a wall. It's an inherent conflict of interest," Mr. Trump said.

Is this stance understandable, or an indication of his true racist self?

Rubbish TTT ! A Judge is a Judge is a Judge. Trump is plainly trying to use his favourite weapon, the race card.

The litigation, as far as I can see, does not have an ounce of racial content in it whatsoever. If you read Gromit's link, its about this :::

"In 2011, the company became the subject of an inquiry by the New York Attorney General's office for illegal business practices that resulted in a lawsuit filed in 2013, which remains ongoing"

Trump has been rude and offensive to lots of groups of people, including the disabled, women and anybody who isn't a Christian. What can we expect he will do next ?.....Object because the Judge in any future case is a women for instance ?

Trump is desperately trying to obfuscate, in order for this not to be aired in the runup to November's Election.

I have said this before, but I am constantly amazed at the tacit support this racist ogre gets here on AB !
//The Trump University:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_University //

this is the "mobile" version. if you look at the desktop version, you can see the "view history" tab. if you click this you'll notice that the page has been "locked", presumably because it was believed to have been the subject of editorial vandalism.

i'm not sure whether such vandalism would show the Trump University in a better or worse light. but you can be sure that (for the same reason that universities don't sanction wikipedia as an information source), this page's content cannot be trusted.

Why would him being a member of a professional body mean that he has a conflict of interest?

I've looked up details about the Latina Law Bar Association, and can't see anything there that would cause a conflict. They don't represent or support Latino people trying to enter the U.S. The association is there to support American Latino lawyers. So the issue of conflict is very weak.

But Trump also says his objection is on the grounds that Gonzalo Curiel is of Mexican descent. Surely that's racist? He is assuming that Curiel would be unable to exercise his duties, specifically because of his race.

Good question from QM at 10:18...exactly what is this "vested interest" ?
Quizmonster, the judge doesn’t necessarily have a vested interest in the fate of the university, but he may not be impartial. If an all-American judge were appointed there would be no suggestion of a conflict of interest - although the new fellow may, of course, be just as anti-Trump as some of the posters here.
QM...apparently all we need to cure this problem is to ban everybody from being a Judge, except those that can prove that they are 100% white, with not a trace of non-white, non-American blood in them, and preferably trace their ancestry back to the Pilgrim Fathers !

Its as if the civil rights movements of the 1960's hadn't happened !

I posted the Wiki info on Trump University, because some people may not be familiar with the University case.

Trump is not claimng a conflict of interest by the Judge. There is no connection between Trump's propsed immigration wall, and his Education scam. Trump is saying the Judge will not be impartial because he might have a different opinion on one of Trump's unrelated ideas. He wants to dictate that his case will be tried by a Republican, Trump supporting Judge, which is not really how impartiality works.
In legal terms, Donald Trump, the man. is an utterly different entity from Trump University, the "educational" institution. (I put the word 'educational' in inverted commas to indicate that...from what I've read about it...I consider that description to be a joke!)
Donald Trump, per se, is not on trial as far as I'm aware, so what is he havering on about?

But why would he not be impartial?

How do we know what he thinks about Trump and his idea of building a wall between South and North America?

He might be in support of it.

He might be against it.

He might be neutral.

We (and Trump) cannot possibly know this, unless the judge has spoken on the issue.

We know that Curiel is of Mexican descent, but who knows...if he were replaced with a non-Latino judge, they might be a staunch Democrat, with an insurmountable loathing for Trump.
sp...far too much common sense there for some people.
I can't wait for President Trump's inauguration. Not least, to rub the AB lefty's noses in it.
If the judge follows the template of our own immigrants, he will be paying lip service to the States but harbouring a deep rooted loyalty to his ancestor's homeland.
Roll on Svejk .. !
Togo....I wasn't aware that we had any Judges in Britain, that were being less than impartial because of their racial background.

Here is an example of a Black American woman Judge being completely impartial to a two member of her own race in court. I apologise in advance for the length of the clip, but it is well worth hanging on to the bitter end.

You have no need to narrow my reflection down to judges only mikey. I specified immigrants and their ancestry. We have enough home grown evidence, of the far from impartial decisions made by our judiciary, to be justifiably sceptical.
And what evidence is that Togo ?
oh dear Mr Trump does have you lefties in a tizzie doesn't he! PMSL
here's one:-

if this man doesn't want to have a hard time in prison, the solution surely isn't to claim you can't speak english but not to have beaten your girlfriend up in the first place? or am i missing something?
TOGO are there specific judges or magistrates you care to accuse of bias?
When your self-inflicted micturition is over, TTT, perhaps you could have a look at my question directed to you and timed at 10.18.
