Donald Trump has said that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel had "an absolute conflict" in presiding over the litigation on the Trump University case, given that he was "of Mexican heritage" and a member of a Latino lawyers' association.

Mr. Trump said the background of the judge, who was born in Indiana to Mexican immigrants, was relevant because of his campaign stance against illegal immigration and his pledge to seal the southern U.S. border. "I'm building a wall. It's an inherent conflict of interest," Mr. Trump said.

Is this stance understandable, or an indication of his true racist self?

I thought that was rhetorical QM, even you can not fail to see the conflict of interest here.

Just to be going on with you understand.
TOGO, any evidence of UK Judges/magistrates being biased because of their heritage?
TTT...there is no conflict of interest as far as I can see...perhaps you would like to spell it out for QM and myself ?
Togo...11:38....I can't see any evidence of bias due to race in your clip.
Since we know nothing whatsoever, TTT, about the judge's "interests", as others have pointed out above, I'm afraid I can't see any conflict involving them in this case!
It's perfectly possible - though still relatively rare! - for someone to be a Tory in Scotland and people have political "heritages" as well as ethnic ones, don't they?
He/she might well also be an Edinburgh judge. Are you seriously suggesting that such a person ought to be barred from trying any case that only marginally involves Nicola Sturgeon?
QM...that is exactly what some people on here are suggesting !

We even had one person that suggested that an "All-American" judge should be appointed !

Whatever "All-American" means is anybodies guess of course, but I would suggest a Trump look-alike would be the only person acceptable to our Trump fans.
is this more lefty obtuseness? Forgive me but the ways of the left often elude me.
Gromit, //There is no connection between Trump's propsed immigration wall, and his Education scam. Trump is saying the Judge will not be impartial because he might have a different opinion on one of Trump's unrelated ideas.//

I know. That’s the point.

Mikey at 10:32. Drivel like that exacerbates racism.

SP, //why would he not be impartial?//

He may not be impartial because he is of Mexican descent and may therefore have private views on Trump’s assessment of Mexican immigrants. It’s not unknown for people to support those of their own ethnicity, or indeed for immigrants and the children of immigrants to support immigration per se. You’ve done it often enough yourself.

//who knows...if he were replaced with a non-Latino judge, they might be a staunch Democrat, with an insurmountable loathing for Trump.//

That’s exactly what I said at 10:28 - but if that were the case there could at least be no suggestion of a conflict of interest arising from race issues.
Mikey at 12:13. I really don't know why you get involved in discussions when you don't understand the question.
//However, black lawyers and court staff had much less confidence in the system than defendants. Of black lawyers questioned, only 43% believed there was always equal treatment of ethnic minorities. Just 28% of black court staff believed minorities were always treated the same as others//

Even the judiciary themselves think there is bias based on ethnicity. Stop hand wringing and open your eyes to the facts.

But the case in question isn't about Mexicans.

It has nothing to do with Mexicans or South Americans.

So why is the judge's professionalism being called into question?

Given the Judges background and membership of a Professional Association, I don't understand why he was given the case in the first place, it just screams conflict of interest!

Why?

Should his race be the determining factor in his ability to do his job?
//Should his race be the determining factor in his ability to do his job?//

Why not? The BBC had plenty of support for a recruitment campaign based purely on race, I seem to remember certain members of AB being very enthusiastic about just such a bias.

I'm not going to assist you in padding your thread out by pretending you don't understand the reasons, to anyone capable of conscious thought it stands out a mile.

That's different. The BBC designated a couple of positions on a training scheme. They're not saying that white people cannot be scriptwriters.

Baldric - fair enough. If you don't want to put your argument across, that's fine. Have a nice Sunday.

"There are none so blind as those who will not see!"
//That's different.//

Why is it different? Because suits your mindset? I see no difference. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander sp.
