//James Salmon, who owns tour boat company Dover Sea Safari, has rescued scores of migrants from the English Channel in the past year - and warned that the problem is getting worse.//

If this has been happening and getting worse for the past year, why hasn’t it been more widely reported?

Jackdaw, nothing at all is wrong with Northumberland. It's one of my favourite places. Just a long way from Calais.
All of these will have been on the TV news headlines once Naomi, but as I said, for those on the south coast it is not new and no longer newsworthy.

When the nationals receive the news reports they're looking for a new story that will sell papers, they're not interested in keeping us informed about life on the south coast of England. I suggest you lobby your MP about it. The issue is the immigration not the media coverage of it.

Jackdaw, I wouldn't fancy their chances reaching Seahouses after hearing about those crossing conditions of late!

Naomi - there's conveniently no airtime left to report these incidents. We've had the Scottish referendum, EU referendum, the only thing we haven't had is a migrant addendum!

Maydup, you're preaching to the choir.

ag, except the one from Greece!
The length of the coastline around Britain is estimated to be around 12,429 km or 7,723 miles, plus the fact that there is nothing to stop small aircraft from flying in and landing anywhere. It is impossible to control all but a few of the most obvious targets.

One method of assessing a person's right to be in the country would be to have identity cards, as are obligatory in most countries. When the government tried to introduce them a few years ago there was a public outcry, led largely by the Liberals. The idea should be re-introduced, pdq.
Khandro a problem with the ID cards is that they would be forged.
There were a few ID cards issued as a trial run, within days the first forgeries were found.
I saw a report that several loads of illegal immigrants had been landed on remote beaches in North Wales none were caught, the problem is literally all over the coastline
The government are well aware that there is nothing they can do about it, it is impossible to patrol all 7,800 miles of the UK coastline 24 hours a day 365 days a year. I suspect this is why we hear little about it.
It's perfectly possible to patrol the whole length of the coastline but there's no point.
For the vast majority who arrive there's no sanction, just a shrug of the shoulders and state funded largesse morphing into acceptance of third world ways and beliefs as normal to avoid giving offence to the invaders.
//Why do they keep bringing them to Dover, we have a Border Control in Calais, why not dump 'em back there where they came from? //

because there's no convenient train service from Calais to East Croydon.
