Yes, that's why I worded my comment so - child has survived but what horror did he see?
Why does the west want these people here?
I don't think they do, Naomi, but they also don't want to turn their backs on genuine asylum seekers.
I do not think that the west generality does. Politicians are acting in the misguided belief that they are showing charity to fellow humans in need and need to show their society is not uncaring. I think they have difficulty weighing up the advantages of helping others against the peril they put their own citizens and society.

I suspect also they have no trust that neighbouring countries to trouble spots will be able, or wish to, uphold their responsibility to keep genuine refugees near their border until it is safe for them to return; and so the west will have a situation to deal with anyway. Of course the correct way to deal with that situation is to ensure strict border control and send folk to help the genuine refugees (until they show by their actions that they are not wanting help) at those neighbouring countries.
ummmm, genuine asylum seekers are very few and far between. This has become ridiculous.
But many claim to be fleeing persecution or hostilities or something. Then one has to show otherwise.
I know it has. What can be done though?
The least we can do is stop any more coming right now - and stop pussyfooting around the 'sensitivities' those who are here. Our utter stupidity renders us the authors of our own misfortune.
Western Europe is embarrassed into letting new arrivals dressed as refugees in because they don't want to appear hard-hearted.
That same officialdom would though, have a legitimate traveller who lost there passport refused entry, detained and returned whence they came without so much as a blink or a cup of tea.
Depends where the cameras turn up to apply pressure I suppose.
I was in Malta recently and according to an ex pat the refugees are moved straight on to Italy.

I don't know how true that is...
ummmm, the majority of them are not refugees. They're economic migrants.
I know that but they claim to be.
More fool us for taking them at their word.
It's not just us though. It's all of Europe. What is Europe suppose to do with an overcrowded boat load of people. Let them drown?
Safer in the EU?

Right on Dave.
Umm, its simple. Lock them up until they admit where they come from then send them back.

Once word gets out you will see number dwindle.
The rest of us don't get anywhere if we 'claim to be'. We stand in line with two forms of ID or get sent home to find it.
Gutless politicians and their minions are at the root of the problem. If they had all said no in the first place we wouldn't be swamped now as a continent.
