Naomi, firstly an apology as my earlier post was a bit terse.
I don’t think it is a silly discussion, I think it is reasonable to discuss whether things that voters were encouraged to believe that they were voting for should form part of a manifesto, but perhaps not on this thread. The thread is about why Boris isn’t running and I chipped in with my view that he is worried that he wouldn’t be able to deliver the ‘package’ that some voters think they have voted for. I can tell from posts that there are a lot on here who would be happy with anything as long as we are out, but I am not sure that is the view of most, and I do think that the new prime minister will be judged on such things in time to come. But it just a view for discussion and I am astounded by the reaction from some.

Garaman, thank you for the apology. It’s appreciated.

In the run-up to the referendum the Brexit camp were simply putting the case for 'out' - and they meant 'out’ with no ifs and buts. That is what the ‘Leavers’ voted for. That and nothing less. Compromise wasn’t on the agenda. However, those ‘Leavers’ are now presented with ifs and buts that the ‘Remain’ camp have subsequently added to the mix solely, I think, because few expected 'Remain' to fail, and therefore none had seriously considered the possibility of a ‘Leave’ victory. Such was their confidence that reality hit a little too late – so now we have ifs and buts, that weren’t there previously, up for discussion.

Haven't read right through but I believe Boris and Theresa have come to a mutual agreement as was indicated a few days back on the news. So Jackdaws first reply on this thread rings true. May will be our next pm and Boris will be there right behind her to guide us through Bedsit. Personally, I am pleased. And two fingers up those that said all Boris wants is DC's job!
An act of treachery by Gove prompted Boris to withdraw He was furious when Gove decided to stand himself and withdraw his support for Boris.

We may invoke A50 but it will not lead to being out of the EU.
Boris has been comprehensively outmaneuvered by Cameron. The next leader of the conservative party will have to deal with leaving the EU which is as said, a poisoned chalice. Once A 50 is invoked the terms of leaving , again as i have said many times, are determined by the European Council WITHOUT any input from the UK. The EU council will decide what the 'Guidelines for exit' are. We have no part in deciding those guidelines. We can only negotiate on what is put in the guidelines. The EU council will not put freedom of movement ( aka unlimited immigration) in the guidelines as it is the founding principle of the EU. So we can not negotiate on that and Boris knows it very well. Therefor the next Prime Minister will have to start the process of leaving by invoking A50, but the terms offered will be so harsh that we can not possibly accept. This leaves the PM in a difficult position he/she will either have to accept the conditions we are offered or withdraw A50,( which is allowed under EU rules) . Whatever happens the next PM's political career is over and the Boris will step into the gap as the 'saviour'.
Boris never thought 'Leave' would win ,it was all part of his plan to be PM.
He was hoping there would be a narrow victory for 'Remain' so that when Cameron retired as he had already said he would, Boris would be waiting in the wings to step into the limelight. Leave winning has really '***ed him up. Remember only hours before he announced he was supporting 'Leave' he was on the phone to Cameron asking what his 'reward' would be for supporting 'Remain'
