Sorry I did not want to post on this today but my hand has been forced. Gromit and co has ignored this question several times today. Even if by some sort of skulduggery the winners of the referendum can be cheated out of the result are you happy with that? Will the EU not see what a bunch of dishonorable popinjays we are and not want anything to do with us anyway?

I think leaving the EU is a backwards step and takes the UK in the wrong direction. I can't really think of anything concrete at the moment, because -- as has been made very clear this last week -- we don't yet know who is going to lead the UK in the coming negotiations, let alone what direction they actually intend to take. For the time being, I fear that the damage Labour's done to itself is almost irreparable, and I don't think that's at all good for the long-term future of the country; and the Conservatives aren't exactly looking healthy at the moment either.

But that's not really the point here, I don't think, which is that while Parliament should endeavour to carry out the result of the referendum as far as possible, it should also be part of their job to judge if it is, after all, the right thing to do. A referendum that was by definition advisory can't suddenly be compulsory.

Legally it is advisory, morally, in a democracy, it is the will of the majority and should be considered compulsory; unless a "major" case can be made to show it is an awful decison. The way it splits the country suggests such a case isn't likely to be possible to make, since reasonable folk come to different conclusions.

There is no facility in the UK for a legally binding referendum. ' but that is not true since in the AV referendum in 2011, the result WAS legally binding.

Can you name anyone who could be in governmentwho who do that and take the risk that we could easily have 5 years where we lose all financial credibility and lose our trade to Europe while we try to find new trade deals with China, USA, Australia etc? It seems a big risk.

When i change banks I don't cancel the DDs and then deal with potential fallout (adverse credit rating etc) . The banks have a process for ensuring a smooth transition. That way seems to work well to me.
