"We understand that debates get heated, but personal attacks and abusive language will not be tolerated"

Can we all calm down a bit please?

I've been written to several times about how abrasive and aggressive this section has become.

Several have pointed out that the language in particular has become childish and brutish, with name calling and hyperbole being especially annoying.

So let's calm down a bit. Let's stop calling people "traitors to britain" and "friends of jihad" or similarly rude things.

If you can't make your opinion felt without resorting to these personal attacks, then you'll likely be met with suspension, or banning.

All the best,

Ed

This Referendum issue is sort of like a math/maths class: It has created quite a division amongst you, and the gap is multiplying daily with the addition of acrimonious remarks which is really subtracting from the quality of the site.

Simply amazes me that people have to be unpleasant to one another, just cannot see the need tbh.
;o)
Ha! thanks baz. I certainly wasn't banned !

// I'm not in the business of making the personal choices of individuals public. //

Not sure how you would know a members' reason for leaving. They are anonymous so it is not really revealing anything. If you said 'boaty-mcboatface' left because they had posts deleted, then would the invidual hiding behind that name be betrayed?

The people who have left in droves, mustn't have been any good, because no one has missed them.
I'm don't think I've mentioned the royals in the last 2 months ?

//no one has missed them. //

i'm not sure if that's true or not Gromit. I say that because in the past, the mere mention of former site users by current users tended to get their thread removed.
Gromit, //Not sure how you would know a members' reason for leaving.//

Perhaps in a similar way to you knowing that this thread was posted on behalf of the owners - and revealing their user names would, in my opinion, be betrayal of trust. I miss them.
BAZWILLRUN, did I suggest JAMBUTTY had been previously banned or is that your fevered imagination running wild again?

If you didn't see what I am talking about then please read the following and give me your explanation.
// Get off your plaster and get down to the canal!!//

That was written and remains in a News section post.
The next post was mine, as follows: "plaster=cast= ...er derriere... Canal=boat=vote" Translation is Get off your derriere and vote.
Now I see nothing rude,or offensive in supplying that translation and, indeed, rhyming slang is still being used on this site.
As Naomi has said,It is not what is posted it is WHO posts it that shows a certain bias .
Bednobs your comment please on above. Did it merit removal?
aa - probably because your last nasty remark about the Queen and a lizard was removed !! No idea how long ago it was.
Surely "plaster" is plaster of Paris, then Paris rhymes with Aris and so on?
The ABEditor is employed by the owners, and do their job to maintain the good reputation of the business. By default they work on behalf of the owners.

If instead of using sensible debate, a poster resorts to branding people that disagree with them as traitors or terrorist sympathisers, then the sites reputation as an anwers ite is going to be trashed. Hence the poor ABEds attempt at reining in the bad behaviour.

If someone leaves because they cannot debate in a civilised manner, then it is no great loss.
@ JJ. More than 2 months ago :-)
Retro,
Why do YOU have to act as a translation service? Wouldn't it be easier for everyone if the poster used standard English?
TCL
Agreed. My attempt was to try to sanitise it slightly so as not to cause offence. Do you consider my attempt to assist worthy of removal then?
This is going to be a very long and boring thread if everyone is going to require explanation of exactly why a comment of theirs was removed....
Gromit
That is totally straying from the point I made and you know it.
Rhyming slang was used by another. Naomi admitted earlier she hadn't a clue what it meant from the original post and she was grateful for the interpretation. Naomi hails, originally from the East End of London and appreciated the explanation. I do not feel obliged to do it but to assist is wrong in your moderator's eyes is it? Who is interpreting that site rule and where is it? Naomi was enlightened by my help and that is why she queried the removal in the first instance.!!!
I think it's time a moderater removed this, the ABed's, thread. ;)
Gromit, no one, as far as I can tell, is criticising the editor for attempting to make the site less aggressive. However, as is to be expected, discussions develop, and the points I’ve made do not relate to people leaving because they are incapable of debating in a civilised manner. Those, I agree, the site is well rid of.
@aa - so ???
