I have experienced and commented on many times the simple fact that irony does not travel well in printed communication - especially if used by someone who does not tend to use it often enough to be a recognised character trait.

It can, as you advise, be better left alone, and posters sticking to what they mean, unless they can make their irony un-missable, which can be done, but then becomes a bit clunky, and thus removes the point.
