Whether or not one agrees with this, the woman should have known the law, just as a bikini wearing Western woman should know an Islamic country's laws.

People are forgetting that the situation is tense in the south of France, France gnerally in fact. naomi; My bigger point is this; we have to be fair Muslim women cannot wear bikinis, or even regular woman's swimwear on the beach, the reason being that the koran says they should show 'modesty' in public, so by not allowing them to cover most of their bodies you are not forbidding them to swim in the sea, - unfair.
I am very opposed to Muslim women wearing the burka and all forms of 'full-face' covering because the koran does NOT say they have to do this and it is contrary to western mores.
Extending the valid opposition of full-face covering to the burkini is an unnecessary complication and appears to be persecution and doesn't help the burka argument, in fact, it weakens it by demonstrating inconsideration.

The vast majority of these people deliberately wear these garments to prove a point.
There are far more Muslims (those that dont wish us harm) that do not wear them therefore it makes sense to ban all such articles.
I sort of get your point on fairness, but maybe if they all stood up and condemned the jihad against the West then maybe it would not come to this. It's pound to a penny people in this garb are ISIS supporters or at least sympathizers rather than your normal everyday Muslim.

Nobody can dispute the trouble that France has had from extreme Islam recently.
But can anybody please explain why the wearing of a Burkini on a beach in Nice makes other, non-Muslim beach users less safe ?
I have seen no evidence yet that the terrorist outrage caused by the lorry in Nice in July was wearing a Burkini ?

Motley...my argument is that this local by-law is unenforceable, and has been enacted to please the prejudices of some people. Its my opinion that laws such as these shouldn't be enacted to enforce the views of a few prejudiced people.
And I still maintain that it won't make any difference to the security level in Nice. Its dog-whistle politics, no more or less.

Ludwig - //People are forgetting that the situation is tense in the south of France, France gnerally in fact.
Only a few weeks ago a murderer with possible Islamist motives drove a lorry through a crowd of people in Nice.

Don't you? I do.
A group of men (The French government) are, for reasons of their own, dictating what Muslim women should and indeed must or must not wear.
Why is it OK if the government does this to Muslim women, but when westerners decide that their husbands make them do it, that is 'oppression'?
You can't have it both ways!
The would-be burkini wearers should blame the terrorists for the current climate of mistrust rather than seeking to inflame the situation just to make a point.
No, I think they would be right in blaming the French government for state-sanctioned cultural oppression based on their chosen style of dress, coupled with some bizarre notion that any right-minded person would see Muslim dress as provocation.
/ /This must be what they are doing, as they have to be well aware of the law - it's had enough publicity after all. //
I would suggest they are doing it to preserve their modesty, rather than trying to provoke civil unrest. These are 'down-trodden subjugated man-obeying' Muslim women aren't they?
Again, you can't have it both wsays.

Given what's happened in France over the last 2 years it's obvious that ordinary French citizens don't want Islam rammed down their throat nor any vestige of it on public display.
This woman doubtless knew about the law and recent banning but decided to flout it any way.
Furthermore, it's another step towards a secular society, which can only be a good thing IMHO.
Vive la France!

Chilli...isn't it funny how two different countries, at different times, tackle the same problem.
In Germany, a law was passed that all Jews wear a yellow Star of David, so they could be readily identified. But France now wants to make Muslims disappear from view, or at least doesn't want them to be identified at all !
If all the Muslims in France were banned from identifying themselves, how would that make France safer ?
