Disgusting, where we're their brains when they did that. What are we coming to, I'm embarrassed.
.. were ..
They should meet the survivors/ watch the footage of that day.

But Pongo....it has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread.

Trebor Bassett has signed up Noel Edmonds to front its ‘Win a House’ promotion on packs of Maynards Wine Gums, Bassett’s Jelly Babies and Bassett’s Liquorice Allsorts.

Although NJ makes a valid point and we all know that the motive for the attack was inspired by radical Islamists,I am more interested in AB'ers perceptions as to the original question as to whether it is acceptable, under any circumstances,to take selfies and appear to enjoy oneself?

There is no 'solemnity test' and obviously some Americans are going to react against tourists who appear to be disrespecting the site.Obviously, this is open to interpretation and an open-air site is far different to the original example I mentioned where the Auschwitz Museum has very strict guidance as to behaviour.

In this case the stag party members were spoken and I would imagine the Ground Zero site is a tricky area to police.
//Bravo for dragging Islam into a thread that has nothing to do with Islam. //

are you saying that there's no connection with the religion pursued by mohammed atta and the resultant chaos following his piloting of AA011 into the side of a huge building in downtown manhattan? maybe he had other motives for his particular flight plan? would you care to enlighten us please?
Hi agchristie, people are going to take photographs, there are ways to conduct yourself though. Smiling, kissing, selfie stickies? Have we become so removed from empathy for others? The site is all shiny and new, far removed from the devastation that as once there, people are idiots aren't they!

Yes.

That's exactly what I'm saying. This story has two components - drunk lads on a stag weekend, and Ground Zero.

It has nothing directly to do with Islam.
We don't know they were drunk, they don't look drunk.

Hi Elina, yes, people will smile, kiss, hold hands, talk loudly, use mobiles, take selfies and a range of other behaviours. To what extent should people show emotion?

What is acceptable to one person is not to another.

It comes back to that unwritten test of solemnity.

In answer to your original question...yes, it's wrong. Or rather, it's wrong in our collective understanding of what a place means.

Just like it's wrong to walk through a graveyard playing loud music through your phone or it's wrong to tap dance down the aisle of your local Sainsbury's during the two minute silence on Remembrance Day.

It's just...wrong.

However, conversely, it's not necessarily wrong to make jokes which are based around tragic events.

I remember one that Joan Rivers made about 9/11 in 2004. It was interesting to see how people reacted to that, because whilst she was condemned by many, a lot of others thought of it as cathartic.
Typo.

Joan told the joke in 2002, not 2004.
Very poor judgement, keep the blow up doll for the drinking dives boys.
I agree, why did The Daily Wail think it necessary to print 15 pictures with the 'Doll' on prominent display when one would have been enough to make the point!!
I imagine they were only there a few minutes before the police man asked them to move on!

“Bravo for dragging Islam into a thread that has nothing to do with Islam.”

Strange. I know it was 15 years ago but I seem to recall the responsibility for the creation of “Ground Zero” (mentioned in this question) rests with a bunch of people who carried out their deeds in the name of Islam. In Honolulu there is a monument above the wreckage of HMS Arizona to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbour. Perhaps you should ask some USA citizens whether or not that has any connection with the Japanese.

Instead of answering agchristie’s question with a straight “yes” or “no” I thought I’d expand a little. So, no it is not acceptable in my view but fortunately my view doesn’t count for very much. In some countries the views of a few individuals does hold sway hence the reason why I made the connection. Sorry for being so flippant.
They certainly don't look, drunk and therefore why on earth were they carrying the doll around, anyway. It looks surplus to requirements and, pointless.

If they knew they were going to the memorial, you would have thought they should have deflated the darn thing, at least.

Thoughtless and, wrong.
