http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/09/10/traditions-such-as-christmas-celebrations-will-die-out-unless-pe/

but really, is that such a bad thing when to most people in britain now (apart from the devout) it has no religious significance and is now nothing more than an orgy of consumerist consumption?

fanriffic, the reason that its generically called “The Holidays” in the US is not because the religion has been lost but because, at that time of year, many religions celebrate a festival. As well as Christmas, there is Kwanzaa, Hannukah, various pagan midwinter festivals and so on. Individuals offer the greeting appropriate to their own beliefs or to the beliefs of the person they are communicating with.
it is also birthday season for some lol.....
Christmas will never die out!!! I won't let it.

Minty, dropping hints again!!!!!
While people hold on to the myth that he was the messiah and not a very naughty boy it'll be safe enough.

/// What a load of bloody twaddle. You would expect this from the DM but not a serious paper like the Torygraph. ///

/// Motley.....I made the comment I did not because I am a "leftie" but because the Torygraphs article is complete drivel. ///

I wonder how many non-lefties call the Telegraph the Torygraph?

The language is also a big give away.

"load of bloody twaddle", "complete drivel"

All typical leftie expletives.
How can Christmas die out, all the old comics and soap actors need the pantomime season.
Christmas will only die out in families or groups who let it die.

With each generation the way Christmas is celebrated has changed in many areas - but there are still many who uphold traditions - Carol Singing, rituals around when the Tree goes up and memories of ornaments from childhood, setting out the Nativity scene and attending Mass or other service.

It will likely never fully match the idyllic scenes portrayed on Victorian style Christmas cards for a lot of people but for some it is still held dear.

I also agree that commercialism has had a huge part to play, but we give in to that through choice.
