After that incident teachers from the schools involved started supervising pupils en route home - keeping an eye on goings on at bus stops close to the school and in the town centre, with disciplinary measures applied to students who did not behave in an acceptable manner.

My apologies. Thinking about it, the date of that article is probably wrong - I think the incident would have been sometime around 2006 not 1996. I only remember it because one of my daughters was a pupil at one of the schools at the time (though not involved in the melee), and in 1996 she would have been far too young to be attending secondary school.
