But the rest of reality isn't.

No one said they were perfect. They will be a lot safer than human driven cars, 85% of all road accidents are down to 'human error'.
The article says that the new regulations are to provide information in the event of an accident. I can't see where you get 'rules for crashing' from !

divebuddy your link is to a subscription only service of the Financial Times.
I can't open it as I don't have a subscription.

maybe they should have them for ordinary cars too, they seem to crash just as often.
can somebody explain to me why you would own a driverless car - thanks
^^ same reason you own a normal car JJ to get you where you want to go when you want to do it. It just means you don't have to drive, you just tell the car where you want to go and it drives you there.
Perhaps people with conditions that currently limit their driving (like vertigo and eliplepsy) will be able to use them?
so you sit in the passenger seat?
They are not actually on the road yet JJ, still being tested. But on the ones they are trying at the moment the 'driver' sits in the driving seat but does not have to do anything unless the computer malfunctions. Once they are fully accepted I think yes ,you will just get into the passenger seat, or there will only be passenger seats and no driver controls at all.
How many of you will be happy to ride in one?

I would be happy once all cars on the road were driverless. It is the transition period when driven and driverless cars are on the road together that will be a problem.

yeah I'll be delighted when I can get Oliver, crash on the back seat of the old jam jar and have it take me back to the cat and mouse and any carnage it causes won't be my fault. looking forward to it and so, I imagine, are the country battle cruisers desperate for punters.
Great for old people they can use their cars until the day they die.
^ Once they realise the owner has turned their toes up they will drive straight to the nearest funeral directors!
TTT I used to know a guy who had a horse. He would go to the pub and get rat ***sed then climb on the horse's back and it would plod home without him needing to tell it what to do. So driverless cars are just a step 'back to the future' as far as he is concerned.
Also you won't need to sit a driving test anymore. Just learn how to give instructions.
