agchristie, I am not convicting the police officer, but I am not blaming the victim either just because he's black and therefore bound to be a criminal before anything else. which let's face it is what some are saying, however veiled it is.

Haven't read through the 100+ answers but my answer to the OP's question is.... there is no answer other than to not to be in the wrong place at the wrong time - a terrible situation for non whites to have to live with. Am I right in thinking that location may be a factor?

I just watched the dashcam video and for me the most shocking aspect of it is that instead of giving him medical assistance, the police formed a human shield and backed towards the car with the dashcam to block the driver taking the footage's view until a car arrived to fully block the scene.
