That isn't correct. The Kurds have always oppose Assads regime. However, they find their territory attcked by IS fighters and they are a more immediate threat than the Government. The Russians have offered to help the Kurds in their struggle with IS, and have begun arming them. The Kurds are fighting for themselves against IS, not in supoort of Assad. Rather than being in a tacit alliance, they instead have a mutual enemy who take priority.
