As we switch on our Televisions to watch the ITV news we are constantly bombarded with the horrific scenes that are happening in Syria, specifically in the city of Aleppo, ITV have even started to announce the names of some of the children killed in the bombings.

One has to ask why?

Yes it is horrific and atrocious, but what can the ordinary viewer do about this appalling situation?

How much longer are these innocent people expected to endure this suffering, why don't their 'rebel' leaders hold up their hands and surrender to the overwhelming might of Russia and the Syrian forces?

"/// Why don't the British simply give in to the superior might of the German Luftwaffe. Then we can all get on with our yodelling in peace. ///

The German Luftwaffe were not the superior might, never heard of the Battle of Britain?

All that satire, wasted ;-)

Naomi > I'd like to see Corbyn - or anyone - attempt to remedy this over a nice cup of tea.

Pity this conflict didn't start in 1830. Our own PM would have sorted it - Earl Grey!

:)
ag, your quick wit leaves me speechless. I don't know what you do for a living, but if you don't write you're in the wrong business.
Naomi, I always lose the plot :(
Haaaa! I'm serious!!!
The Syrian army would have a better chance, if we sent the COWARDS that are running away, LEAVING their wives and children to do their work.
Most of the men seen in the newspapers, from Syria, should be fighting for their country, not running away.
We SHOULD KICK THEM OUT, and send them back.
They say they aren't animals, dead right, animals protect their own.
I think you'll find that the Syrian army are the people they are running away from...

I agree that a rather high proprtion are young males but I'm not sure how many are parents.
Do you have any info, lrovert, on roughly how many single refugees there are who have made it here to UK. I'm not sure they can easily be rounded up. I'm not sure where we'd drop them off either and hand them over to the syrian army trainers
Most are enemies of the regime, so I don't think handing them to Syrian army trainers would work somehow ...
It's a civil war, not Syria v invaders

Presumably to train them, that is what you normally use trainers for
It's a horrible situation and I have swayed this way and that. What did strike me recently is that someone said that to establish a 'no fly zone' (the humanitarian, immediate, temporary 'solution' to the bombing) was to accept WW3.

To establish such a zone would inevitably entail shooting down a Russian plane. (Russia would probe the determination of the opposition.) Should this happen then I think (along with others) that Putin would seize the advantage of a weak American president in the last months of his presidency (USA also in turmoil over the vote) and launch attacks on the European territories which he regards as properly Russian. Europe, in disarray, will go up in flames. WW3 will result.

So, do we want that? The alternative is to watch the news from Syria. :(
But a "no fly zone" would not be unilaterally imposed. It would be agreed by the US and Russia, except of course that Russia and Syria would never agree to it.

// To establish such a zone would inevitably entail shooting down a Russian plane. //

// [Putin] would launch attacks on the European territories which he regards as properly Russian. Europe, in disarray, will go up in flames. WW3 will result. //

The idiocy and complete lack of comprehension of some ABers never ceases to astound me. A no fly zone would take a UN resolution which would never happen because the the US, Britain and Russia have a veto. The Turks shot down a Russia jet a year ago and WW3 was not the result.

// It's a civil war, not Syria v invaders // - Wrong.
If it was a conventional civil war, it would have been over 6 years ago, and Assad would have won in the blink of an eye.
The rebels are mostly foreigners, Islamic terrorists from Arabia and North Africa. Throw in some Turkish Kurds and sprinkle with a generous helping of US arms and ammunition. That is an invasion, not a civil war.

If Islamic State came to your town, and you did not share their extremists beliefs, you would be murdered. Unless you left before you were murdered.

It's a civil war which has admittedly become an international conflict. But I was responding to the idea that the "Syrian army" were in the market for all comers to return to fight for the fatherland, which is of course daft.
