The best answer nonsense drives me nuts too.

It's only a few days ago I saw people here asking when the Church was going to do something practical re housing refugees.
Good news- better than them having to wander the streets or live among unwelcoming locals. Hopefully it will help them settle in. It's good to see the church acting in a positive, caring way- it may inspire others to think how they could help too.
It's their property to do what they want with - isn't it ?
//A Georgian mansion in rural Warwickshire owned by the Church of England //

As it is owned by the CofE what is it to do with you?
Glad something is being done to help.
I doubt they will have butlers and room maids and hold dinner parties, trt.
Okay, maybe we could ask why the church didn't open it up to the long standing homeless earlier,if that's your point
Depressed at a heart warming story about human nature, compassion and the less fortunate being given hope and salvation?

Wow, I dread to think what kind of stories make you happy.
Just to mention the CofE does a lot of work supporting the homeless, with extra help during the winter.
//A planning application submitted to Warwick District Council earlier this week includes plans of the building and outhouses and requests authorisation to use it for the next five years as “short-term residential accommodation for refugees”.//

Don't worry the Government will have a 'word' with the council and advise them that permission should not be granted
I'm surprised nobody has asked what 'deal' has been done between the Gov't and CofE by way of recompense!
Is this not what Christians are supposed to do?
Offchurch : The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 250.

The church might be doing something for the migrants but they're not doing a lot for the village!

///The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, has offered a cottage in the grounds of Lambeth Palace to house refugees while parishes across the country have been collecting lorry-loads of clothes and gifts for asylum seekers in Calais///

The clue is in the name, The Church of England, what the hell are they doing collecting lorry-loads of clothes and gifts for Economic Migrants in Calais.
That is what they are, they ceased to be Refugees when they failed to claim asylum in the first safe Country they reached and carried on to Calais, empowered by the stupid Schengen Agreement in their attempt to reach the UK and live off the back of the UK Taxpayer.
Hope they don't come to a church hall near me.

///parishes across the country have been collecting lorry-loads of clothes and gifts for asylum seekers in Calais///

Why do they bother when they all seem to be wearing Designer Clothes and have the latest Smartphones?
I get depressed when I see thread titles such as this !
These people are from Syria they are NOT economic migrants, everything they had had been destroyed by a corrupt government. They have escaped death by getting out with no more than the clothes they stand up in.
Eddie, if you believe that you'll believe anything. If they were so desperate why didn't they claim asylum in the first safe country they reached? All this hand-wringing is pathetic.
The C of E has changed out of all recognition over the past 50 years or so. Oh for the good old days of Archbishop Fisher.
Are we not taking an agreed (albeit small) share of those who are deemed to be refugees though Naomi. These are refugees not the people who sneaked in on lorries aren't they?
