I am not that surprised at this, as prejudice and bigotry abound when it comes to nursing mothers.

But in this particular case, the ignorant person making the complaint was another woman !

If something is in my eye-line that offends me, I merely have to rotate my eyes a few degrees in either direction, and it is not longer in my eye-line. If something offends you like this, you have the option to look away. I find most peoples' table manners are absent in restaurants these days, but I wouldn't abuse someone over it - and that is the key to this. You are...

The offended only had to move seats, not rocket science.
" so people who don't like that are free to eat elsewhere."
everywhere has an open breast feeding policy now i would think, to avoid situations like this
The complainant is quoted as saying she didn't want to see the mothers breasts...*not* that she actually saw them. Isn't there a difference? Sounds like she was offended by the possibility...
anneasquith, people shouldn’t have to move seats because others are inconsiderate.
Damn baby wanting food
Rather than breast feed my baby in public I would express into a bottle before I left home and take it with me.
ummmm, that's disingenuous.
My son wouldn't take a bottle
I'm on the mother's side on this one.

I'm not really sure why it's considered newsworthy though. What story are we going to have tomorrow - 'Man insulted on bus' perhaps? ....A man has spoken out about the time he was on a bus and he got into an argument with some yobs about where to sit so they called him a slaphead which left him feeling intimidated and upset......blah blah blah. Big deal.

Omg. Breast feeding is NOT inconsiderate. Its natural. If you dont like it, don't look.
It is fair to say that we are living in a more inconsiderate and anti-social world.

Too many people turn public places into private places whether it be speaking into mobile phones, being rowdy in cinemas and invading one's space as if they were the only people around. Why should folk have to move from their position when being affected by the actions of others?

Manners and respect seem to go out of the window.

Being discreet indicates keeping a low profile. This lady has caused even more exposure by relating this tale and one has to question her real motives.

ooohhhh are the AB sisters here now?
anneasquith, no one has said breastfeeding is inconsiderate.

ag, good post. Spot on.

Perhaps Liz Skelcher simply wanted to point out that quietly and dicreetly breastfeeding in a quiet area of a sympathetic restaurant is not some sort of shame which needs to be hidden away. Anyone who thinks it is really ought to examine their own reasons for thinking so.
