I wouldn't put it as crude as that, it is what debating is all about, one picks a controversial subject up for debate and as in this case, hopefully it attracts responses.
It would be a very boring site if one chose boring subjects and they attracted very few equally boring responses.
But please feel free not to join in if that is what you wish, after all this is almost a free country.

Mamyalynne, is absolutely right. The Royasl made a Net Contribution to the economy of £1.5biliion (2015.)
Buckingham Palace has not even been decorated since 1952 so when the work is completed in 10 years the cost will average just under £5million per year.
Just think how much the Government could have saved had it agreed to fund the cost of maintenance as it was required.

/// It's not unusual to see unpatriotic people making such comments about the Royal Family....
It just sits a little awkwardly with AOG's self-proclaimed 'Champion of all things
English'. ///
In a true English Patriots World, one is free to criticise when one feels the need.
It is not surprising that fail to understand that, because in your liberal leftie world, one has a certain agenda to meet, with no diversion from that allowed.

Not only should the state pay for the repairs, they should provide her (and for the future sovereigns) a new Royal Yacht, with possible contributions from a whip-round the city, and anyone else who would like to add something.
I suspect they would receive more than enough to pay for the yacht, and any surplus could be used to offset the repairs.

AOG even you know full well that The Queen is Head of State and as such she is provided with suitable accommodation. It is as has been said, 'Part of the Job' a 'tied property' if you want to put it like that.
If the Queen were to abdicate in favour of Charles (not that I think she will or should) then she would no longer be able to live in Buckingham Palace, it would become the official residence of King Charles.
Buckingham Palace is also used to accommodate and entertain official foreign dignitaries who are visiting the UK. If it was just a private residence the Government would need to provide other suitable premises , so Buck house pays it's way!

Actually BP has only recently become a royal residence. It was originally bought as a weekend 'cottage' by George III for Queen Charlotte. It only became a royal residence when Queen Victoria decided to move there, mainly to get away from her interfering mother and the oppressive atmosphere of Kensington palace.
AS the Crown Estate returned record profits of £285m in 2014, assuming profits are similar for later years than it could pay for itself in a couple of years.
As an aside why was the building allowed to fall into such a state of disrepair, they have known for years it needed renovating. surely there has been a budget for the upkeep of the building, where has the money gone fo this over the years.
Maybe the building should be opened up to the public for longer each year, the queen is only there for a third of the year anyway. What was he money raised by opening up the building being spent on anyway.
